Learn the maps inside and out. You'll be amazed at how much you can improve just by learning the maps.

cover your teammates
only run out in the open if your under the cover of a teammate
learn how to read radar
binding Knife to circle (xbox) and crouch to R-Stick prevents the dreaded accidently knife swing when aiming

Equip Marathon and run out in front of your team as much as you can so that they start shooting at you so we can see where they are.

Play Free For All until you reach a comfort with the maps. Also, mercenary team deathmatch. This will stop people from having parties. If get smoked one game, stick around...the teams will change.

FWIW....Set up private matches on different maps by yourself and just run around learning the map. This will help tons. I waited to long to do this and I got wacked a lot at the start. Also play the spec ops so you can learn to operate the weapons.

Spec Ops helped my accuracy and ability to maintain cover and concealment.

Don't sprint a lot. Try to only use it when you're running out of cover to another spot.
ETA: and use the SCAR with red dot, sleight of hand, and stopping power when you get it.
