Considering Team USA in rugby is about as competitive as the soccer team (for the most part). Especially now that 7s rugby is in the olympics. What would you rather watch?

Im more just curious what the average sports fan thinks who doesnt care about either one.

rugby ftw. I can't wait till the 2016 Olympics when the casual fan will be introduced to rugby.

you are so biased

but yea...i cant wait for that, I think Rugby passes soccer in 15 years in the US. Americans like contact, speed and lots of scoring. Theyll get that in 7s.

Growing up a football playing soccer-hater I would have thought that I'd be more drawn to Rugby, but I lived in England for a year after college and the level of interest in soccer was so much higher and such a better live-game experience I find myself still following English/ European soccer and rarely glance at what's going on in Rugby.

I lived in Manchester when City had been relegated twice and the games were still unbelievable even though they were in what is now League One and against Lincoln City, Chesterfield ( and Fulham). I also went to to a Sale Sharks rugby game and it was like small-time High School Football (possibly because it was a Friday Night) with a bar.

I'm know there are areas of England that are more focused on Rugby, but that for me made more of a difference then what was on the field.

Rugby is for playing, soccer is for watching, as a general rule.

Except for the USA Eagles, the Rugby World Cup and/or a good 7's tournament, quality soccer matches are better for the spectator.

If the All-Blacks, Wallabies or Bokkies are playing, I'll watch the rugby any day. Great teams all.

Have never watched more than 5 minutes of rugby but I absolutely can't watch soccer. I've tried to give it a fair shake and its horrible. So I'll say rugby if forced to pick.

The USMNT is much more competitive than the Eagles. That being said I played rugby for 20 years so I am a rugger all the way (although I do like soccer a great deal).

Uh no. USMNT is far more competitive. Rugby should copy the USSF's model for growth, as in the past twenty years, soccer has grown in the U.S. leaps and bounds.

Rugby and lacrosse are closer in terms of popularity.

...do your facts next time

Considering how much money in the US is invested in soccer compared to how much is invested in rugby...thats amazing

Even then, lacrosse is more "popular"...but only because its promoted as a professional sport. Once a few people with money invest in rugby, its going to take off and surpass lacrosse easily in the long run.

As soon as teams are bought and promoted like soccer is...i see rugby catching up quite quickly as well.

Those stats are a bit misleading though, there are 11 or 12 international football teams who will always be competitive no matter what, plus usually two or three who are doing well at any one time, with a lot of teams who can shock one of the big boys on the right day in the next 10 or 15 teams. In Rugby (XVs that is) there are only 8 really competitive teams, the old five nations and the tri-nations, then Italy who are in a bit of a no-mans land but getting better, and after that the drop off is huge.

But to address the main point, Rugby is a very watchable game, more so than soccer IMO. I find a lot of soccer to be tedious as frick, two teams just lumping the ball up and down and hoping, but in rugby, the physical games are just as entertaining as the wide open passing ones.

Fiji is going to own olympic rugby. That's where I learned how to play. Every open patch of grass there is covered with people playing touch rugby. They play with dried out coconuts, empty bottles, old shoes, sometimes rugby balls. I am going to enjoy watching them rip the world a new arse.
