I thought the home plate ump did not do a very good job of defining the strike zone for either team. I don't think the pitchers nor the batters on either side ever understood what was going to be a ball or a strike. There were many times when the same pitch in the same spot were called balls and on then a strike.

Agreed, that ump was horrible. It looked to me like he was just as nervous as the players. Maybe at times he should'ev called a timeout to get refocused.

I thought he was pretty consistent with a very tight zone, Tom Glavine wouldn't have won 100 games with this guy behind the plate.

he wasn't consistent at all. In the first inning, he was calling strikes for both pitchers around the plate.

2nd inning, ball had to be right down the middle.

it was up and down from that point onward. But, that's baseball.

Right, if you watch most games you can get a feel of what an ump is going to allow and not. Players don't care as long as they know what to expect as the game progresses. But this guy would call balls on pitches right down the middle one inning and a strike the next. I just don't think either team ever understood what was a ball and what was a strike.

As bad as this is, it's even worse when you notice in this game that he seemed to change every HALF inning. Strikes against one team became balls in 2-strike counts in the next team's at bat.

he was quite consistent

his strike zone sucked, but it consistently sucked - it barely shifted at all much throughout the game

Ochinko was far off of first when he fielded the ball and threw to second. Was anyone covering first to throw the ball there?

There's not half a chance in frick that they turn that double play.

10 feet from the bag? You mean like 2 strides? And the ball is still in LeMahieu's glove, with all his momentum heading directly towards third base?

So, what, he's supposed to go airborne (no time to plant) and sling it across his body and get anything at all on the throw? Let alone enough to get the ball there ahead of a baserunner who, according to your own observation, was about 2 strides from the bag? Please.
