I went at 9 pm this past Sunday to do the dessert tasting at Stella so I figured I'd give you my thoughts.

Atmosphere: We were only there for about an hour, but the atmosphere was extremely quiet and to be perfectly honest, the decor is not what I was expecting at all. For a place on the cutting edge with many of their dishes, I expected more of a modern look to it. It was more of a classical type feel. That's not a knock, just an observation.

Service: The service was top notch. Our original server seemed none to pleased that we were only there for the dessert tasting, but I had told them specifically on the phone we were only coming for this reason. Either way, overall the service was very good with everything. Definitely a solid A on this.

Desserts: When doing the tasting, all the desserts are brought out at one time on one large plate. All in all, everything was fabulous. The banana's foster french toast was absolutely amazing. Maybe one of the best desserts I've ever had. I also found the trio of creme brulee excellent. They serve each in a hollowed out egg shell, so it makes for an interesting presentation. Each had unique flavors that were very noticeable.

The sorbets were also excellent. The cucumber mint sorbet was unlike anything I've ever had. Though I probably couln't eat more than a few spoonfuls of it, it was outstanding.

The "grilled cheese" sandwich was extremely interesting. I thought it was very good and unlike anything I've ever seen before, I just don't think for me it was as good as I expected.

Lastly, of all the desserts, I found the chocolate cake the most underwhelming. I didn't taste the flavor very much, and it just didn't stand out in terms of taste and uniqueness like all the others did.

Overall: It was an incredible experience overall and I'd give the desserts on the whole an A.

Price: My lady friend and I paid a total of $77.00 including tax, tip, dessert tasting, two cups of coffee, and one glass of Riesling. Not too shabby in my opinion.

Dude, I'm doing this on Saturday!

All in all, did you feel like you got enough to eat??

And the big question - did they charge for refilling coffee??!

I would say it was definitely worth the money. The food was outstanding. And I was a little concerned it wouldn't be enough for two people, but let me assure you it certainly was- we finished most of the desserts, but there was food left. We both left very full and on sugar highs.

As for the coffee- now that I think about it, I didn't even check to see whether they charged for refills. Though after thinking about it, the dessert tasting was $47, the wine $10, and the total before tip was $65(includes tax though). And both cups of coffee were mine. So I don't believe they charged me for the 2nd cup.

Very satisfying overall and I can't wait to go back for a full meal when I've got a spare $200 or so lying around.

This bothers me. You called ahead and informed them of your intention your server can be pissed furious all he/she wants but a customer SHOULD NEVER notice that in any regards.

Yeah, the website makes the prices there seem almost cheap. That place is sneaky that way, I discovered recently after a $300 meal for two.

We already told them when making the reservation, and they were totally nice about it - but I'm confirming with them again!

I'm so glad that I rarely drink when dining out...

Great review....of my favorite place...It is a very expensive place...but damn well worth every penny....I'm sorry to hear the server had an attitude...but I think the 12 buck tip on a 65.00 meal let him know how you felt....great idea on the dessert tasting...I would like to try a progressive dinner in New Orleans...have to get TA working on that...(you out there TA).

That's not exactly a bad tip (it's over 18%).

Maybe it's just me....but if you just keep my drink glass full and bring my food you are going to get 20 percent....now piss me off and you will find a penny....but at Stella's the service was tops and I left 30%.....I'm sure they would have left at least 20% had it not been for the server's attitude....but do we really want to get this tip thread going again?

Absolutely not!

I just think he would have left much less if truly unhappy - I know I did at August a few weeks ago.

It didn't sound like he was that unhappy...and it sure didn't put a damper on his meal....if it had I'm sure the server would not have gotten even 10%.....but I do drink when I go out to eat so I tend to go a little overboard sometimes...but really the waiters in the upper end restaurants in new Orleans are professionals...not the fly by night partimers we have at most places in Baton Rouge...so I'm always impressed by the service there.

I am usually a generous tipper. And I called her "the orginal server" because it was very odd- she originally came to us and gave us all the menus and started telling us about the menus, etc. We didn't want to be rude and interrupt but afterwards told her we had made reservations specifically for the tasting. She didn't say anything, it was just this look she had that I could tell she was annoyed.

Then, another person brought us the dessert menus and took our order. Then, someone else came back and asked if i needed more coffee.

By the end of the meal, I realized I had never seen the "original" server again. So even though the service overall was very good, I wasn't really sure who was waiting on us. So that's why I didn't really leave more. Had she waited on us continuously, I would have easily left more.

I was also expecting more of a modern look to it. Not that I was dissapointed but I wasn't expecting that from what I heard was one of the best restaurants. After I left I didn't care because that was my best dining experience EVER

I figured that....and I think you were fair with the tip...I think what might have happened (just a guess)...She was not told it was the dessert tasting....thus the look was for whoever took the reservation....and I imagine the multi-service is SOP...those waiters are used to 3 and 4 hundred dollar tables...none of them would want to spend the night serving 65.00 tables...so they share the job to keep it fair. the trick is to keep everyone happy.

Which is extrememly RUDE to the customer and unacceptable.

The guy is spending $75 for DESSERT! He should not be looked upon as a cheap table unworthy of her attention by some waitress by any means.

Yes it is.
I have heard of some people getting that look and less than great attitude because they are not ordering alcohol while dining out.

I agree that having drinks, especially wine, makes for a better dining experience most of the time, but some people just don't want to do it.
