Usually when learning a new system, especially defense, it takes a bit to get up to speed.

They can only go up this season after last season's faux pas. I think they'll be pretty good this season.

i dont think so . if you have great athletes with with a strong desire to get to the ball then you can have a pretty good defense. offense playbook is much larger than defense. and its not like they are going to a 3-4. the personnel changes will be the biggest adjustment

Supposedly, Chavis' system is supposed to be easy to "pick-up" mentally. Just what I heard though.

not with our athletes, as long as they are remotely close to where they need to be they will make plays

this defense is very simplified and easy to pick up. our players will have no problem adjusting to it. there will be alot less subing in and out. which was a huge problem last year.
we will play a base 4/3 and when the offense goes to 4 wrs we will go into our dime pkg. not much nickle in the chavis system.

simply put; WE WILL BE A HELL OF ALOT BETTER

Got a report from a good friend that have been to the scrimmages. The defense looks like that of old. Flying to the ball, knowing assignments, knowing where to be, making reads, etc. The down linemen and backs are looking good with Brick and Cooper. Chief has a good control of what its takes to get these guys to make plays. They will be fun to watch this year.

From the way I understand it, he has two personnel packages that run the 4-3, Nickel and Dime formations. One of the LB's will be a SS kind of guy that can either drop back into coverage or play LB. The "mustang" package brings in an extra DB for clear passing situations and they line up in the dime.

Your post was right, just clarifying that he does run the nickel, just with the same package as the 4-3

Depends on how complicated Chavis wants to make it. Saban had lots of blitz packages which took multiple seasons to implement.

One of the big contributors to defensive collapse in '08 was over-substitution. Which led to confusion and IMO really kept players from getting into any kind of rhythm. Sounds like Chavis is going in a different direction.

Looking forward to seeing the return of some dominant defense.

Does anyone remember Chavis' defense from the SEC championship where NONE of the players were set at the snap? They were literally dancing around to confuse the O. I like the creativity. I wonder if we'll see that kind of ingenuity from Chavis at LSU.

Chavis said himself, he plays base 4-3 most of the time. Different terminology I am sure but same ideas. Without all the substitutions and a simplidied D I think they pick it up quickly. Besides being aggresive and not reactionary will cover up some mistakes

Thats the truth. I can't count how many times last year we had guys running in and out in all these packages trying to react to offensive substitutions. Guys always seemed to be shrugging at each other about who was doing what. Burned a lot of T.O. that way. That's going to be a huge difference.

Also our secondary should be a lot more seasoned. If LBs are even just above average, then it will be a very good defense.

I remember a couple years ago when lsu played tennessee, the defensive linemen were moving around alot, even at the snap. And it confused the hell out of the offensive lineman. I hope he throws a couple of suprises in like that.

Chavis said it best when he said that he wants to dictate what the offense does, not the other way around. In this day and age of college football, stopping every team every game is virtually impossible. But if you can minimize what you allow the opposing offense to do, you limit their effectiveness. Last year we reacted opposite to that line of thinking. We allowed the offense to dictate what we put on the field, which resulted in some problems. And let's not forget how inexperienced we were last year. I realize Eugene and Hawkins were juniors but they were first time starters and had never played considerable snaps prior to last year. One thing our abundance of substitution did was give a lot of guys a lot of game experience.
