interesting article. ive been thinking about this lately. should i buy now and risk losing thousands on my home investment since prices are going down or should i bite the bullet and rent. what good is buying, say a 250k house if it loses 50k in a few years?

but i hate renting.

Why do you hate renting? What's to hate?

i just hate how rent prices in some areas are so out of whack that it makes it more expensive than buying

BR the past few years has gotten crazy with increasing rent, and the supply of renters is there. i'd like to one day make my mark on BR again, but i'd hate to be paying 1000/month for a 1 BR apartment in a shitty complex

In states where you dont pay state income taxes and they make most of there money from property taxes renting is the best move. Unfortunately I own in Austin, Tx but at the moment it seems to be holding steady 6,200 in property taxes paid this past year, that could be half a years rent at a very nice apt. I want to sell.

aside from having nothing to show for my money spent, stuff usually isnt up to my standards. carpet stains, loose mouldings, etc. owners just keep up as little as they can, which i dont blame, but it shows.

maybe its because i don't like spending a whole lot for renting.

How can it be less expensive to rent an apartment over buying a house? What would it cost to rent a thirty three hundred square foot apartment? Show me the numbers.

When I first moved to Austin right after Katrina, I was living in New Orleans. I got a great place, essentially brand new which backed up to the greenbelt for 960.00 a month

BR rent prices are just so damn inflated. I've been looking around at other cities where my fiancee might go to PT school...BR is the most expensive to rent.

I own a 1500 sq foot townhouse in lafayette. My mortgage is $1080 a month including property taxes and insurance. They rent out for $1400 a mo.

Tell me how renting is better.

My argument involves the property taxes paid on the property. If i wasnt paying 6200.00 dollars in property taxes a year then that would be 1/2 a years rent at a 1000.00 dollar a month apt. Because texas does not have income tax I would be getting a break, and only essentially paying 6,000.00 a year to live.

I know plenty of people who have recently moved to houston and pay 2-3x what they were paying in BR.

Not familar w/ the rest.

Property tax is a bitch in TX

Houston is really excluded from that list because my Aunt and Uncle have a guest home on their $950,000 home that they would rent to us for a nominal charge...

But in my quick scans on CL and such, the loft style apts downtown are the exact same prices as the two new downtown developments in BR...

Ask who ever you rent from if he is paying the taxes on the rental. I would think it is part of the rent. You are still paying the taxes ,it is just done indirectly through the owner of the rental.
