Tigernation,

To all who are not familiar with the situation, former LSU basketball player Duane DeArmond who played back in the late 70s with Rudy Macklin, Jordy, Scales, etc. was diagnosed with cancer back in August. I started a thread about him then. He was better known as Disco D. Since he is my best friend, I have been asked numerous times for an update on his condition.

It breaks my heart to tell everyone that Duane was sent home this past Monday from MD Anderson to spend his final days with this family. The cancer that began in his kidney, liver, and lungs eventually spread to his brain and now his spine. His doctors advise that he is not strong enough to handle another surgery, so it has been decided to stop all treatments and let the cancer take its course.

I had a long telephone conversation with Big D last night. It was one of the most amazing conversations that I have ever had with anyone. Fortunately, he was alert and coherent, which has not been the case too often lately. Instead of playing the victim role, he went on about how grateful he is that he is able to spend this precious time with his wife and two sons. We talked about death, life, children, family, the past, and other life’s important issues. We agreed, as strange as it sounds, that he is really lucky. He has already won at the game of life.

I asked him for two favors. One was to tell my deceased sister hello whenever he gets to heaven, which he assured me that he would do. The other was to pull some stroke in heaven and have LSU win a BCS championship at least every three years, which he said that would try but couldn’t guarantee anything.

We have no idea how much longer Duane has. It will be day to day from here on out. He was hoping to start a thread on TD last night, but it appears as though that didn’t happen. If at all possible, he will try to put in a few words on here whenever he can. The world is a better place because of Duane DeArmond. When it comes to heart and soul, he is the best tiger ever. Prayers are appreciated for him and his family.

God bless.
Ranty

Going through a bad time myself. Things could always be worse. It sounds like he has lived an incredible life, and has everything in the world to be proud of. Especially his family. My prayers will be with him. Sounds like he's going to visit all the good people that leave this world.

Ranty, I hope that you understand that just putting this message out there is helping your boy out. Be proud of him, and let our prayers help him get there.

Father God, Hear my prayer,

Father, Your son Duane is coming home. I pray that Your Spirit comfort him and that his salvation is secured in Christ Jesus.

I pray that his wife and sons may be comforted by the knowledge That you are the eternity we all look for and in You our lives truly begin.

Father, please ease their pain of loss of their father and husband and hedge them from the grief.

I pray in the name that is above all names, Yeshua ha Messiach, Jesus the Christ.

AMEN

The prayers of this old man are with Duane. He is a good guy. I met him when my son was at LSU back in the 70's. A very nice young man. God bless you and your family Duane. Do not fear. God will hold you in his arms.

You know, I did not know he was sick. I remember when he played at LSU, and those were great days, and I had met and played softball with Joe Costello and Mark Alcorn and of course we know how Mark died of cancer when we made the Final Four run to Philly in 81'. This is incredibly sad, and I wish they had made some mention of it at the 100 year celebration a few weeks ago, (I assume they didn't), but just to acknowlede his plight as a former player. God speed to him and his family and all his friends.

I remember hearing about him when you first posted his story. Again, I am too young to remember his playing days at LSU, but he sounds like a remarkable guy. My prayers are with him, his family, and his close friends.

panzer, that's a beautiful prayer! Duane, you and your family are in my prayers. This journey may be ending, but a new one is about to begin. I hope it's everything we've been told about in the Bible.

God Bless!
