UPSET OF THE YEAR IN THE SEC . . .

. . . Our D-Line being 10th in the league in sacks 1/3 of the way through the season.
This disturbing stat goes a long way toward explaining the problems in the secondary and the lack of forced turnovers (I think we have forced a grand total of 3).

This upsets me a lot too. Thought we'd have many more sacks than they do right now. The pressure is getting there but the QBs have been doing a great job getting away from the pressure we've played. We had the MSU QB sacked a good 3-4 times and he escaped all but 1.

Have you seen how stout we are stopping the run at the line of scrimmage? Get out of here with that shite

3 step drops = zero sacks

Haven't we played one less game than most?

I agree... a lot of the secondary problems can be avoided and/or "masked" if we start putting more pressure on the QB ... although the run defense has been stout for LSU.
Although I think the thus far inability to pressure the QB is due more to scheme and our opponents rather than the ability of our guys to pressure the QB. Honestly, I don't think we were really "trying" to put added pressure on the QB ... I think we knew we would win against App State, North Texas, and State and tried rushing four so as to not tip any blitzes off to Auburn and Florida coming up.
I think we'll see more imagination on defense when we go to Gainesville. I've got faith in Peveto and Mallory for one reason ... Miles hired them.

We don't seem to be blitzing a whole lot, which is the REAL reason we aren't getting sacks. It is hard to get sacks with just a 4-5 man rush.

LSU has always had the big, fast physical line that allows our D to leave the safeties in coverage. Never had the speed rushers. This is a great D line, and they do what they are good at. Which is shutting down the run.
our pressure has in recent history come from blitzing safeties, backers, and nickel personel (extra DBs) after forcing the offense in third and long by taking away the ability to run on early downs

Alem is a pretty good speed rusher and Pittman can also get off the ball pretty well. I think offenses know they have to get rid of it quick against us. We also are trying to protect a young secondary with help from the LBs/nickel backs. I still think the thing to do to most QBs is to put them under duress.
Ole Piss got after Tebow last week and he was fumbling bumbling stumbling.

I think the lack of turnovers is a much more disturbing possible trend. But it's too early, really to get upset about either.

SPREAD OFFENSE===FEWER SACKS!
We have played 4 games and 3 were against spread teams. That is the explanation...no more no less.

Team's gameplan to keep LSU from getting sacks. 3 step drops, screens, draws, ect. Trust me our D-Line is playing very well this season. Look more at the game film and less at the stats and you'll see that.

RUN defense has been awesome - cn not ask for more; however, if we do not put pressure on the QBs, the good ones will kill us.
You can not ask the defense to cover receivers for a long time.....sooner or later, they will come open.
The best way to keep a QB from throwing a 30 yrd pass, is not not give him time to do so.
our defense is soft in the "pressure" area,...we have not been aggressive.
this puts a lot of weight on the linebackers and secondary.......who are getting better, but are not there yet.

furthermore, according to the LSU media guides, our sack totals have been in constant decline since the 2005 football season.
Averaging over 3 a game for 2005 with a total of 39, to losing a sack to a total of 38 in 2006 season. 2007 season (NC season) we averaged close to 2.5 a game with 32 sacks in 13 total games.
This season we are averaging only 1.5 with 6 sacks in 4 games.
Steady decline, the trend continues. No surprise. At this rate we will eliminate sacking the quarterback completely while simultaneously 3-peting as BCS national champs

LSU Stat rankings
we have 6 sacks in 4 games = 1.5 sacks a game
we didn't show anything special for ASU or NT, and were conservative against MSU.
