Looking at purchasing a new ZTR to cut my 5 acres. Some smooth, some rough ground. Had a Dixie Chopper silver eagle 25hp 50 inch cut and motor blew on me.
Looking at Gravely ZT HD 60 inch, but want opinions on what you think is best mower around the $5000-$6000 range.

You'll want at least 60". Still gonna take you 1.5-2 hours id guess. I'd get an in shape, used commercial unit for that much turf.

I used to cut right at 8 acres on a scag turf tiger 60" and I've done 7 acres on a John Deere diesel that was probably 72" or something. It was huge.

Out of those two I'd take the scag. That John Deere was ignorantly powerful but also ignorantly huge and heavy. It would sink through blacktop. I think I could go just as fast on the skag because with zero turns, the yard determines max speed more than the machine. If it has any semblance of roughness to it, you can only go so fast before you just can't hold on anymore.

How long you had it? How much grass
You cutting with the 42? I am leaning hard toward the ZT HD just wondering how it will hold up on my big yard.

not gonna get a turf tiger for 6 grand
they do make some smaller ones though
Bigger engine is better than wider cut if that's the choice

I have a 42" Gravely ZT. It's not the HD model. It has a 24HP kholer and I can cut a .61 acre lot in about 45 minutes. I would get the HD upgrade if I had the amount to cut you do. I have only had mine for 2 years but my dad had one for 10 with only issue having to replace one of the front wheel assemblies.

Check out the Bad Boy and Spartan ztr mowers. Both are hard to beat for the price.

2yrs about 0.5acre but we also mow some residential yards on the side (8). I have the 42zt model with a 24 Kohler and it is perfect especially for the small yards I cut. I haven't had any issues and it cuts great - you definitely need a wider cut but if you find a Gravely you like you can't go wrong in my opinion.

the 36hp/60" turf tiger I have cost 11g and that was five years ago
but scag does make smaller/less commercial grade mowers for less than that and they are all well built

never a lick of trouble with the two I've owned and they got worked hard

I bought a 50" Dixie Chopper in 04 and have had absolutely zero problems. Oil and filter change only thing I've had to do.
Love it

Commercial Hustler or Big Dog mowers. American made by the same company. Great mowers.

I cut 4 acres with a 60 inch Turf Tiger. I can cut, weed eat, edge, and blow everything in less than 2.5 hours if I'm booking it. What ever you do, look at them all, sit in the seat, and get comfortable. The suspension seat on the Scag is a life saver. The liquid cooled Kawasaki is just about bulletproof too!

Edited to add- it is double your budget but, you know the old saying. You get what you pay for.

That's hardly necessary for cutting less than 10 acres once a week though. Those things are make to cut grass for 8 hours a day every single day. They are definitely the shite, but a homeowner can spend his money elsewhere.
