I noticed over the weekend while scouting, that the locations that I choose to scout have very similar traits. I end up always scouting areas that are right up against one of two areas. 1- big creeks/ bayous and property/ road boundaries.
What's your style?

Well my least is pretty much all hardwood thicket, so my options are limited. But it's obvious that our best spots are within 200 yards of a creek.

Luckily, my stand is closer than that.

At our piney woods lease the top spots for seeing deer are edges of different age stands of timber; roads/trails or any opening in the woods; and creek-beds where there are some oaks.

My favorite terrain to hunt is open hardwoods. My access to that type of land is in the national forest, and I always seem to gravitate toward the creeks there too.

For sure. Creeks are the interstates of wild game.

As to your question, I hunt in a hilly pine transitioning to hardwood bottom near a creek in LA. My favorite terrain though is West Texas hill country. Rocksprings, Kerrville and Fredricksburg, TX type areas.

Best shooting house I've got is in a hardwood stand of about 8-10 acres surrounded on three sides by pine plantation and a creek running behind. W TN hills & ridges.

Where hardwoods bottoms meet pines....that line will always be a natural travel for deer.

That's where I hunt (Junction). By far my favorite area.

We had a lease in Rocksprings a couple of years, then Barksdale a few years following when I was a kid between 8 and 14 years old. I was a deer slaying son of a bitch.

Beautiful country.

I've hunted around the College Station area a few times as a young man, but I stay in LA for the most part these days.

I like the big swamp. I have more success on the edge of it, but the big cypress flats are just so damned cool. Nothing is as fun as killing a buck in the big swamp IMO

Palmetto, with a little water on the ground. I love hearing them coming through the water.

Heavy snow that pushes the deer to lower elevation. Broad Meadows not far from beach access

Been on my lease since 2003. It is across Hwy 83 from the YO ranch. If I can help it, I'll stay on it til I can't hunt anymore. It is affordable, high fenced, managed by the same family for a 100 years, and full of deer and exotics. It is an 8 hour drive, but worth it to me.

This brings up a whole different discussion. Our lease never produces bucks at night. ALWAYs in the morning.

i hear about all these guys killing monsters right before dark, so i hunt as much in the evening as i do in the AM.

Have never seen a muture buck.
