Tried to search to see if this has been discussed before on this board but I was wondering what the difference between the A and X bolt is and which one you prefer. TIA

X-Bolt is the new model. The action is not as long, making it easier and quicker to cycle through to a new cartridge.

X-Bolt also has a better trigger and you can operate the bolt while the gun is on safety.

This is my only complaint about my A-bolt. I have to place the gun on fire to remove a round from the chamber. The detachable box mag, de-cocker and bolt release are great though. Been having mine since 95. The Browning A-Bolt safety is the most quiet I have used.

I got my X-Bolt 2 years ago and I love. I definitely prefer it over the A-Bolt I used to use. I'm trying to trade my Remington 742 30-06 for a Browning X Bolt .280.

I shoot the A-bolt .280 and the trigger is fine after having it lightened up a bit...

Although I like the fact that you can work the bolt on the X with the safety on, I still prefer something such as a Model 70 that has the 3 click safety. Being that you can work the bolt with the safety on on the X, the bolt is easy to move and will not fire if moved up any. Probably doesnt make sense but if youve seen it you know what I am talking about.

I agree about the action-much shorter, and IMO, smoother. I bought my son an X-Bolt in 7mm-08 a couple of years ago, and have taken a couple of animals with it, and it is a really sweet gun.
