Would you rather live on a bayou with a small lot or on 3-4 acres with no waterfront?

I currently love along a bayou and love it but we're outgrowing our house and there aren't many options to build a larger house on a similar piece or property. I'm trying to figure out if a larger non-waterfront lot would be a better option.
Thoughts?

I have a 2600 sf home on a 40' wide lot. Yard upkeep is minimal...
This is waterfront property.

It would depend on what the bayou could be used for

I think this would be totally dependent on how much YOU really love living on the bayou. You already know about what can be built on the bayou vs a bigger landlocked lot. Now there is a personal decision to be made.
To answer your subject line question, for me it would be 3-4 acres of land over 1/2 ac or so lot. I don't like living right next to someone.
Maybe a main house on a big landlocked lot and then a camp on the bayou.

On the bayou. In it is not for me.

I tend to gravitate towards more land. I'm not worried about grass upkeep as much. I would, however, love to own property on the water where I could go easily when I please.

I'm on the bayou 65' lot; completely lined with a 10' wide dock. Can't be beat.
Run crab traps from the yard, leave the boat in the water, easy drop for the kayak, etc.

I live on the water, three covered slips where I can turn a switch and the boat is in the water. Been loving it for 41 years but I wouldn't encourage anyone else to try it.

Why is that?

Ok, so we can't currently build anything in or along the bayou (decks, boat slips, etc...). It sucks but I do love being on the water. We may be able to in the distant future depending on dredging and other regulations being lifted. The bayou is bayou Lafourche and it's not that great for public access.
Nearest public boat launch is about 10 miles away and the bayou doesn't connect to any lakes for 20+ miles. So even if I had a boat and a slip, it would just be for up and down the bayou near my house.
Basically my benefits are a view of the bayou, a place to throw crawfish shells, and my kids can catch catfish off the bank. And even with only these benefits I still love it. But I don't know if I love it that much to build a forever house without more use.
I also don't I've within 200' of my neighbors and I certainly don't want to move into a neighborhood.

Bayou providing it was navigable. If its between living on water that I cant go anywhere on or having a big piece of land, I'd choose the land.

you don't "have to" build out, just add a second floor and double your square footage in the same footprint

I currently live on 4 acres with my property on a bayou. Love drinking coffee on my front porch and listening to our wood ducks in the morning!!!!

Well the great debate is move and build vs renovate. Either way we're probably looking at a new $250k mortgage.

Waterfront. Currently live on, previously lived on 1.5 acres and that was too much upkeep.

Yeah, this is what I don't want to give up....

That shite looks muddy. Clean your bayou

We are currently building on Bayou Lafourche, just south of Labadieville. Talked with the Bayou people and hopefully they will dredge in the next 3-4 years because I want to build a dock. Bayou will look so much better after.

Yeah, I've talked to the folks dredging and it's so open ended. Lot of "we hope to...". Do I believe they will open it up? Yes. It could be 20 years from now.

Adding on to the house out of the question?
