Its a dry cold up there. -40 up in Minn would be like 40 in Shreveport.

I would rather camp than play or watch a football game in minus temps. At least I could build a fire.

I've been in -40, it hurts.

I made a vow to myself after I finished college that I would never sleep in a tent again, ever. I have kept that promise 10 years so far, and I don't intend on breaking it.

If I had to, yes.

Cold weather camping is a skill which I haven't really mastered, but I understand if you do it right, you can be quite comfortable.

I heard you gotta make yourself like a rotisserie chicken on the fire.

I've slept in the upper 20's and was comfortable. That's about as low as my gear will go.

-40 is crazy cold. I've skied at about -10 but not for long.

Dig into the snow. It's a hell of a lot warmer there than it is on the surface. Snow insulates you from the cold. There's no way I would camp on the surface at 40 below unless it was absolutely necessary for survival.

Ive been in -36 degree weather, not camping tho. I had a place to go when I couldn't bare it anymore. You can feel the moisture in your skin starting to freeze at -36. No way I would want to camp in -40.

I did winter survival course (one day) up at the ski area years ago. Basically you dig a cave in the snow with a narrow opening. It's a bit tight and unnerving in there but it's much much warmer than the surface.

That's why, after many years of laboring as a trapper and guide—and after doing considerable search and rescue work here in the mountains of Colorado—I made a special effort to work out effective methods for building snow caves and winter shelters. It's also why, when I now lead a group on a winter survival cross-country tour, I don't allow my students to bring tents. Instead, I teach them to use their wits, and the crunchy substance beneath their feet, to make overnight homes.
