I made a vow to myself after I finished college that I would never sleep in a tent again, ever. I have kept that promise 10 years so far, and I don't intend on breaking it.

Dig into the snow. It's a hell of a lot warmer there than it is on the surface. Snow insulates you from the cold. There's no way I would camp on the surface at 40 below unless it was absolutely necessary for survival.

I did winter survival course (one day) up at the ski area years ago. Basically you dig a cave in the snow with a narrow opening. It's a bit tight and unnerving in there but it's much much warmer than the surface.
