Thanks Wick,

This area of Nebraska isn't known for turning out giants but has a good population of whitetails and mule deer. I've seen 40-50 or more mule deer a day. Been a lot of fun but we weren't seeing many older bucks.

This morning that changed. After missing a narrower but taller mule deer this morning I was pretty dejected. It was an off hand shot at a moving deer at 100 yards and I missed by a country mile.

We spotted this guy a short time later bedded down on top a little ridge near some does. We could tell he was wide and decided to give him a go. He was half a mile out and we tucked into a canyon and snaked around to the finger we thought he was on.

As it worked we popped up to the top and he was on the adjacent ridge. He was standing with a dozen does and extending his neck to scratch his shoulders using his rack. Pretty picturesque scene.

So we quickly dropped the bipod down and steadied up for the shot at about 150 yards. With all the does around the only shot I could get was head on so I dumped a 180gr Barnes X from the 300 Weatherby right in his chest. He made two steps and broke down. Pretty amped for my first mule deer.

As for score I have no idea. When I checked him in at the check station the Warden indicated that 150 B&C or better make it into the state record books. He indicated this deer would have no problems.

I've hunted with this outfitter for turkeys for the past 2-3 years. Me and the outfitter hit it off pretty well. The area hasn't been hunted for big game other than the local farmer who owns it. This year they decided to try their hand at outfitted deer hunts. Myself and two others were the guinea pigs.

The farmer actually acted as the guide along with outfitter. All three hunters ended up filling tags. Two solid whitetails and this muley. The whitetail guys hunted from stands and my hunt was spot and stalk.

No, didn't recover the bullet but looks like it got held up around the hip.

The best was a short but heavy 8 pointer. Main beam was like a cucumber all the way to the end. Probably won't gross score better than 130's or so.

The other hunter shot a solid 2 1/2 year old 8 pointer with some junk and kickers on the second day of a 9 day hunt. He could have done better but the cold temps got the best of him. IMO, he would have shot a spike to end the hunt. He was pretty defeated after the first day. It happens.

I saw a nice 5x5 whitetail yesterday that would easily cross the 150 mark.
