Who needs a 12 gauge turkey gun when you can get patterns like this from a 20?

Heres a few pics for the turkey guys on the site.

Last year I picked up a Benelli M2 in 20 gauge to be my new turkey gun. I installed an Indian Creek Black Diamond Strike .555 and topped it with a Burris Fastfire III this Fall. I had a friend of mine custom load some Tungsten Super Shot (TSS) shells for me. For those unfamiliar with TSS it is heavier and more dense than lead or Hevi Shot. By comparison Hevi's weigh 12 grams per cubic centimeter and the TSS comes in at 18 grams.

First pic, my old load. Hevi-13 20 gauge 3" with 1 1/4" oz of #7 shot... 220 pellets in a 10" circle from 32 yds.

Second pic, the new load. TSS 20 gauge 2 3/4" Express loaded with 1 5/8" of #9 shot. 456 pellets in a 10" circle from 35 yards.

Guess which one I'll be shooting this Spring?

Why not just use a .22?

I would never advise it with any other type of shot. Due to the high weight and density of TSS you can achieve energy levels with TSS that are equivalent to much larger lead or alloy shot. Imagine compressing a #5 lead shot into half its size while retaining all the weight. In essence this is what TSS is. In penetration tests TSS #9 actually penetrates equally well to Hevi #6...

Right. Okay. Didn't realize it was that much more dense

That's superb stuff. What's he charge for a shell? $10?

That pattern caught your interest did it?

You have to pay for performance, but it's cheaper than Nitros. Imagine what that 12 gauge 3.5 of yours would do...

If for nothing more than cleaning up cripples.

How'd the snapper news go over with the wife?

Ive seen the carnage that TSS creates on waterfowl firsthand. It shreds teal like they were struck down by the hand of an angry God. You'd never have to put a second shot on a duck or pluck one again.

TSS is pricey and must be imported. A few guys are using 20 gauge loads for ducks that I'm aware of. They say that loading for 12's is simply too expensive.

Sounds like just the thing I need for cripples.

How do you like the Fastfire III? I am thinking about getting one for one of my turkey rigs.

I've always used a fiber optic front bead for turkeys so switching to the FF3 was a bit new to me. Learning to raise your head off the barrel to look thru the site took me some getting used to. That said, now that I've got the hang of it I'll never go back. Very happy with the FF3..

I have a scope on my Remington and I purchased a Winchester SX3 this offseason. I was thinking maybe an Eotech or Fastfire for it. Nice pattern on your 20 I would take that all day. I shoot straight 7 hevi in my guns with good results. I have got to get on the ball with getting it set-up with turkey season only 3 weeks away.

If your used to a scope you'll adapt to FF3 in no time. The season is getting close and I can't wait...

I've never understood the obsession of using 4 or 5 shot for turkeys. I killed 5 out in west Texas with #6 shot 2 3/4 med brass. I even killed 2 in one shot. I like more lead not bigger.

I like your pattern because even if you pull a little bit it's still a dead turkey.

I agree...

Since the arrival of the high density shot I've been a big fan throwing a swarm of smaller shot instead of a loose spread of larger shot. I seldom even get flops out of my turkey after they drop now...

I can't decide between the Fastfire or possibly the Eotech. The price of the Fastfire is tempting though.
Heavy loads have made larger shot unnecessary imo. My Remington 1187 with with an Indian Creek choke will pattern 220 hits within a 10 inch circle at 40 yards. They impact with the force of #5 lead which has performed very well for me. I have killed numerous turkeys with this load and would recommend that others try them. In my area it's very hard to find #7 loads since most people consider the load to light for turkeys. They just aren't taking into consideration the weight difference.
