Making a goose hunt this weekend. Have never hunted specifically for geese. I have a Rem 1100 I can shoot 2 3/4 shells with a 30 inch full choke barrell or an over/under I can shoot 3 inch shells full choke in a 28 inch barrell. Assume I shoot #2 steel from both. Which gun/ load would you use?

I'd shoot the 3" gun with BB or BBB load.

I've killed geese with both 2.75 and 3", #2s-BBB. Hope for a clipped wing or head shot

Minimum 3" BB

Aim for the head

Don't flock shoot.. pick a bird and blast.. rinse and repeat !

Lead and follow through geese fly faster than they appear

Escopeta de ganso? (Sorry, that's one of the coolest sounding names for something in spanish. )

I'd shoot the 3" even though you are giving up the third shot. Get 3" BB's and make sure it's a heavy load like 1 3/8 oz. shot.

Why wouldn't you do this? Been shooting steel through a full choke all my life (actually the extended range pattern master) and never had any issues

3" BB or BBB

When you go to the store make sure to say you need some triple BBs though

I've head people say that.

It's "BB's" or "triple B's".

When goose hunting last week I was using 3" BB and I would watch the bird take a hit and recuperate and fly off like nothing happened. The steel couldnt penetrate anything

The general rule of thumb for steel shot is that you use one less choke level than lead, so if you want full you use modified. This has been around since steel came out. Most turkey chokes for example say specifically not to use with steel shot.

You can over choke which actually makes the shot hit and then spread out, but its also dangerous as steel won't warp if it is forced down a choke too small there is a minute risk of blowing up your barrel by plugging it up.

Seen that happen with 3.5" BB's too. They're tough.

Like other said, lead and shoot for the head on crossing/passing shots. If straight up shoot at the wing to bring them down. Instead of squaring up on them, I shoot the armpit, where the wing meets the body. Still lead them, but just get a little left or right of center.

When we cleaned birds, anything that hit the breast didnt penetrate. All died from head shots or chasing them after a wing was hit.

FYI geese can run fast but not far

I picked up some 4B Hevi shot the other day on the cheap. Have been inconspicuously taking a few with me but have not had any opportunities to test their effectiveness yet.

Should have used 3 1/2" and shot them in the head, baw. I saw BIL had to clean up for y'all. (Chase)
