+1 on this. That's really the only rifle that would be a bad purchase.

Savage, Tikka, or CZ are all priced fairly reasonably and perform very well.

All the things I've heard about the Ruger American are that it is a reliable and affordable rifle. If that's your criteria it will suit you just fine.

I personally hate the hollow sounding and plastic feel of the stock, but it doesn't hinder performance.

Best advice I can give is don't cheap out on a scope or its mounts. That's not to say you need to drop $2500 on a Swarovski but I'd avoid a Tasco or Simmons

What is your budget? Where will you hunt? Thick woods, marsh, or bean fields/pipelines? A good starting point is to decide on the action type and caliber. Are you a rightie or a leftie? Many great options out there from $350 on up. Modern rifles are good values now.

Sorry, missed your 30.06 choice. A great versatile round with probably the most loadings available.

ruger american would be fine for $350 range. I like those and savages. put a decent scope on it, and you will be set.

I'd spend more on the optics than the rifle.

Good breakdown from Citica8. To the lower priced tier I'd add Marlin Model 7, Mossberg and Savage Axis. I'd stay away from the Remington Model 770.

Any real benefit other than the name?

Today's deer hunters have more good, yet inexpensive, guns to choose from than any other time. It's hard to go wrong a Remington Model 700, Savage Models 10/12/16, Ruger Model 77, Howa, Weatherby, Browning, etc. The main benefit will be in the specific characteristics of each gun. E.g., I don't like the feel of the Axis or Ruger American as both are to skinny for me in the rear handgrip area. Handle different models and see which ones fit you best. Decide whether you want a higed floor plate, box magazine or blind magazine; what kind of safety do you like....tang safety or wing safety? I think you get the idea.

Which brand would you suggest for my first rifle?
Depending on how much I want to spend, I'd feel comfortable deer hunting w/ any of the aforementioned guns.

I've got a Marlin xl7 in 30-06. Very solid for the price. My only complaint is the lack of a removable magazine or plate gets annoying if you need to unload frequently.

Perfect place to buy a rifle that's been dropped out of a deer stand.

Didn't like that on mine either so I poured a pound of shore 10 silicone into the stock. Boyd laminate stocks are also a option for $120.

The old rule of thumb was that you took your total budget and spent 1/3 on the rifle and 2/3 on the scope/rings/mount.

Times have changed and even Leupold has reasonable offerings at the lower end - but I still say you're making a mistake putting a $250 scope on an $800 rifle - general rule of thumb, currently, should be spend as much on the rings and scope combined, maybe even up to 10 or 15% more, as you do on the rifle.

As others have said, shoulder different makes and models.
See what fits good and what's comfortable.
Can you reach the safety easily while the rifle is shouldered?
Work the bolt with the rifle against your shoulder.
Also remember during hunting season you may have on heavy clothing on.
My 700 CDL fit good in the store, but I have somewhat short arms, and come December when I put on that big jacket, it didn't fit so well anymore.

You're probably spot on with caliber choice BTW.

Which Remington sucks worse, 710 or 770?
