I'm originally from Houma, but now live in Walker. Buddy of mine and I would like to teach our boys what it's all about. Is there anywhere near that is public where we can go crawfishing? Anything around Hammond, maurepas, manchac, French settlement, etc? I just want to make sure I don't end up on private property. I know I can go to sherburn, but would like something closer. I have a boat, UTV, ATV, etc, so I'm ok with any type of access.
I'm not asking where your honey hole is, just want to be able to teach the younguns and show mama how the man puts food on the table!

Thanks!

Sherburne WMA has crawfish ponds that usually produce solid yields. Not much in the BR-area. All private land that doesn't take kindly to trespassers.

Might be slightly to early. Usually March, April, May you'll catch a ton more. Anywhere where there's a large body of freshwater. Usually next to trees or vegetations good. Actually the best crawfishing is in flat-low lying areas. If you can find a swamp off the road in the Mississippi River Basin or Atchafalaya River Basin which is practically all South Louisiana Id do that. Ive done it in the Red River alluvial plain just south of Shreveport and that's the best area compared to outside the river bed

Anything that smells horrible and is oily and fresh, they'll like. Gutted fish is pretty good.

We used to crawfish on the east side of Hwy 51, between the old highway and the railroad tracks. South of Manchac and north Ruddock.

Thanks Tamer, I'm familiar with most of what you mentioned. The only challenge I have, other than if you ask my wife, is finding local public property. I have a camp in the basin where I can load up, but that's about 3.5 hours one way and by the time I'm done paying for fuel for the truck and boat, it would be much cheaper to buy a sack!

Any WMA with set nets will be a good place to start. Just find a ditch that's not immediately downstream of a cooling tower at some nasty chemical plant and get after it.

Yeah, this. I have so many crawfish chimneys in my yard you'd think they're having a love-in here.

Hell, I might just break out the little Deere 870 and the box blade, make some levees and let the hose run.

I was just about to post this sane thread. I have some swampy area behind our lot. Was thinking about dropping some traps in there and trying it out. What are my chances? Is there any thing specific that crawfish need to thrive?

When I was a kid mydad took my fam to a place in Vidalia where some flood water was falling out across a dirt road. Scooped them up with dip nets. Caught enough to fill every bucket and chest we had. CSB
