Where are the wood ducks and why do I now have teal?

Hunting the same beaver pond we have hunted for over 10 years. Until this year we had only killed wood ducks, mallards and hooded mergansers out of this pond. This year there have been almost no wood ducks and all of a sudden we just have green wing teal with an occasional mallard flying over. We have never even seen teal in this pond before.
What's up with that?

i would think that some GWT happened to find it this year by accident, and thereby brought in other teal staying in the immediate area. if there's food and shelter there, they'll keep using it for sure.
as for the dissapearance of the woodies,

Sounds like someone may be chopping your woodies while you not there. Happened to me Thursday morning.

Woodrows can be finicky animals, shoot them good one year in a location, then nothing the next. I've seen it 100 times.

It depends on how much you hunt it as well.. If you hunt a wood duck hole more than a couple of times a year they will abandon it and never use it again..
Hope that isn't the case for you...

If you have a woody hole that lost it's woodies, somebody done shot your woodies. I would be happy about getting some teal in there though..

This man knows what he is talking about.
They don't just up and leave at the drop of a hat. Now if you shoot them more than a couple times a week they will leave.

My younger years got me well versed in poor wood duck management.

is there any flood water nearby? if there is they will avoid the lakes that get shot at on if they have some flooded sloughs to go in.

Have never roosted them on pond. No one else is hunting it because no one is stupid/crazy enough to get into this hole and I have a camera watching for people too. This hole has always been hit or miss. Limit out in 8 minutes or just kill a couple of ducks. We are careful to only hunt it a few times a year.
We can't even hear wood ducks flying. I guess all the acorns are gone and they have moved on.

Is this more of feeding location or a during the day rest area? Fricking Woodrows are wired different. They sit around all day in mostly small groups in secluded backwater. About an hour before dark, they haul arse to whatever spot has acorns. After eating, they fly in droves to a roost that is really nowhere near where they hang out all day. They also fly into the roost well after shooting time to give Green Jeans an opportunity to bust your arse and make easy money for the Federal Government. They leave this roost once again right at shooting time to feed again and then back to the hangout spot to sit around all day.
If any of these sites gets fricked with, they gone.
