Three inconveniences caused by an expired DL

1. Couldn't purchase a money order using my credit card at a bank because the renewal sticker on the back of my license was not legible. Why?

2. Just got a call from the dealership where I bought a truck last week. I purchased the truck and they copied my license between my birthday and the day I realized my license had expired and renewed it online. I just had to take a picture of my renewal receipt and email it to them. Why?

3. Was purchasing a gun with the same license and illegible sticker as #1. Passed back ground but had to leave Houston and drive back to Louisiana and get new license and then go back to purchase gun. Even though it was obvious what the sticker was for and simple mathematics would prove my license weren't expired but the expiration date was illegible. Why?

Why does a drivers license become ineffective for a photo ID once expired?

Add a fourth.

My wife and I were in a bar in Asheville and ordered drinks. They looked at her license and it was expired so no drink. I laughed at her and handed them mine which ended up also being expired. They actually would not serve us until I talked to the manager and she was hesitant about it. I mean the damn thing clearly showed our age but she said it was not valid.

They were both expired by less than 2 weeks.

I'd hit them all and not be overly picky!
Guess the OP thinks not having an up to date hunting/fishing license is OK too.

So, why not just not let it expire and you don't have these problems? It's not like it doesnt show the expiration date on your license.

Two of the three were renewed but the cheap arse sticker the state issued faded. The other was within two days of expiring and IIRC you have a 10 day grace period.

How often do you look at your DL?

Yes I do, as a matter of fact I've never had a bank or bar or car dealership ask to see my hunting license. I'm not questioning the fact of an expired license while driving.

My question is about the significance of when the license expired for the purpose of identification. It's still a state issued card with my photo, name and birthday. Whether it was issued three years ago or five years ago those facts don't change.

I might play time games with some things, licenses aren't involved it them.
If you want to try your luck and then bitch when called out, go for it. I see
no reason for your argument other than laziness.

I'm not bitching, I'm asking a legitimate question. Why does a drivers license become invalid as a photo ID to make a credit card purchase just because the expiration date is illegible on the renewal sticker. I'm not questioning driving with an expired license. Since you don't have the answer just remain a quiet tiger.

You seem to forget that people/companies have set aside rules prescribed by the law. I'm thinking you don't own a business or could care less if you do.
All the best in your endeavors, but I'd recommend keeping your shite current.
Is it that hard? Geez!

Exactly this, never. I just checked it and I'm good for another year.

Now that inspection sticker that I have that expired May 2014 I should probably look into.
