In January of this year I shot a male wood duck in Iberville Parish that was banded in Browning Illinois on 8/22/2006. USGS report said it hatched in the year 2005 or earlier making this bird 9+yo. The couple other banded ducks I've killed were 3-4 years old tops, I've heard reports of them living 20 plus years, I'm curious what you or your buddies have killed...

I'm 42 and have been duck hunting since I was 16. I hunt a lot and never have gotten one.

Wood duck, banded in August 2012, killed in December 2012.

It was also banded about 2 miles away from where I shot it.

My buddy who occasionaly posts here ended up getting 2 back to back in that same spot in 2013. One on Saturday and one on Sunday.

Perks of hunting near the banding factory.

Shot a 5 yr old banded canvasback about 15 years ago. Everything else was estimated less than that at least time of banding was less. You hear about people that shoot bands that aren't even legible they are so old.

The trick to shooting bands is to shoot mallards. I've seen some teal, wood ducks, and pintails, but it's overwhelmingly mallards that are banded and killed the last time I looked at the records. We have had seasons at our camp where over 500-1,000 grey ducks have been killed and I've never seen one band from them.
