I'm looking at the Ruger American Predator 6.5 pretty hard. Any from the OB have one?

Honestly thought it was a fad until I got one and killed with it. It's not a fad. They are the real deal.

What does it do differently that a 243 cant do?

.260 is a better comparison.

Don't see me dropping a 330lb aoudad at 380 yards with a .243 after having owned it a week and shot it about 12 times.

Then a 6.5 isnt capable either.

Glad you asked. Looks like a solid round from what I read. Also read it is taking the place of 308 for distance shooters.

Yes it is.

Kevin Brittingham shot a red stag with a 6.5cm at 650 meters out of his Fix.

The round is still supersonic at 1200-1300yds.
The round is amazing.

I have a predator and love it but it’s a .308. I have a Magpul American Hunter back ordered for it.

My AR-10 is a 6.5 cm. I have not hunted with it yet but it’s pushing a 143 grain bullet at 2700-2800fps

I have the Savage in 6.5, it hits like a hammer and is flat. I made a poor shot (pulled to the right just a bit) on a Buck last year at 225 yards, the deer only made it 100 yards or so, and that’s after me bumping him. It’s a flat round and carries the energy well. I’m going to add a 6.5 AR here soon.

So is a 243. Because the 6.5 has heavier bullets makes you feel better but it wont kill any better than a 243 at 300yds. Thats a fact.

Ballistics at that range is the same between the 2 rifles and a bigger bullet doesnt kill any better.

The 243 has a smaller bullet so the energy will be less at that distance. Im sure 90% of people here wont be shooting at 650yds with their rifles.

Im not against a 6.5cm, its just for hunting purposes a 243 can do the same thing at 300yds.

Then by all means keeping shooting your .243 if you're that comfortable with it. I've killed animals with both, and I've seen the difference. But maybe I'm just a bad shot

.243 drops 45 inches and has 850 energy at 500yds

6.5 cm drops 44 inches and has 1270 energy at 500yds.

So, based on your reasoning a .300 win mag and .243 is the same thing at 300yds?

I dont own either one. I shoot a 270, but I hunt with guys that shoot 223 and 243 and none have lost a deer yet with over a dozen killed between both the last 5 years. At distances of 100yds or more also.

People that shoot 7mm, 7mmRUM, 30-06, 270 etc have all lost deer even when hit, so bigger bullets dont mean anything. Its all about shot placement.

A dead deer is a dead deer no matter what caliber you use at that distance.

My son is 12, shoots a American in 6.5 Creed. It’s a tack driver with very little recoil that hits harder than a .243.

how did this turn into a .243 v 6.5 thread. No one was discrediting the capability of .243 taking deer. OP was asking opinions on the 6.5. As to what a 6.5C can do that a .243 cannot is perform better at distance, and likely closer, due to its much higher BC, somewhere between 30%-40% higher than the heaviest .243, and superior in-flight ballistics with regard to drop, drift, velocity and energy. I understand the subjective reasoning to choosing .243, but all things considered, objectively what advantage does the .243 have over the 6.5C?
