About 3 weeks ago, Mama BFIV totaled her 2001 Subaru LL Bean Limited Edition Outback when she swerved to miss a deer, jumped the curb and scraped the guardrail. Busted the two front tires, grubbed off the muffler, and the right side of her car looks like Richard Petty's old Plymouth after the Darlington race. We've already replaced it with another Subaru, but it isn't the car the old one was. Only 56K miles on the 2001 Outback. I can buy the car back for salvage value which is $1353.00 or I can just let it go and let the insurance sell it for salvage. Damage is mostly cosmetic, no fluids leaking, no frame damage. Just trying to decide if I ought to buy it back for salvage value. This car had all the bells and whistles and was in mint condition. I'm leaning towards buying it back. What would yall do? TIA

Aren't those things great in the snow? Got an extra parking spot and extra monthly money for insurance?

HELL NO.

I would think that if she jumped a curb and hit hard enough to bust tires, you could have all kinds of issues with the front end. And who knows what else.

I'd sell the current one for one that I wanted.

You'd be left with a car that you'd have to get fixed. But even if the body shop put it back together perfectly you'd still be left with a salvage title on the car (meaning you'd get less for it when you decided to sell it).

IMHO - you should walk away from it.

I was thinking about that possibility, too.

Nope, she really did swerve to miss the deer. Witnesses saw it happen. Was at 5 am and she was headed in to work. I told her and so did the cop to just hit the deer next time. She probably did have the CD going with some good bluegrass music, though...

She did, too, Chad. She bought this car in May. Got unbelievable deal on it. One owner. She's cried like a little kid ever since this happened.

Yep. We just got the permanent tags for it the week before she totaled it. Older couple bought it brand new from the dealer and traded it in for a brand new Forester. Had all the service records. It hadn't even been detailed or cleaned up when she bought it. They had just traded it in. I've got to make a decision by tomorrow afternoon...

Just walk away from it.

Just not worth the hassle/money of fixing it and then still having a salvage title.

I didn't. She did. But she still got a great deal on it. Have you checked the Kelly and NADA values on a car like that with only 51K miles? She was offered 10K for it by the insurance agent when she bought it. I've found out since that Subaru hold its value very well. She shoulda sold it to him! I'm serious when I say it was in MINT condition.

That's it, Chad. Hers was a beige (sp?) color, though. This thing was loaded with all the bells and whistles. You can't even tell it was wrecked until you walk around to the passenger side. Wheels alone should be worth 8 or 900 bucks.
