I have the opportunity to join a hunting club in my area with great property. In the past I've been restricted to hunting small tracts of land with limited resources so this could be a game changer for me. The only problem is I've never been associated with a club. What are things to look for to make sure it's really worth the money? This is the first year it's going to be an actual club. In the past it's been reserved for the owner's friends (who will be become members this year) and business clients. So some game management is going to be required the first couple years. They've met with local DNR and have a plan to properly manage the land. The DNR has agreed to actively work with us to achieve this.

Membership is $2000 a year and includes:
1,700 acres
2+ acre lake that I've been told is well stocked
2 bedroom house that is fully furnished (beds, drinks, canned food)
Great deer for this part of North Ga.
Food plots are maintained by an outside company year round.
Stands are claimed by a board system
Minimum kill size will be discussed after membership is full but I've been told it'll be more of a trophy scale.
Guests must be approved prior to coming and are only allowed to take does.
10 member limit

That all sounds great. Just make sure all the members are on the same page

If I were joining a club, I'd make sure I had at least a couple stands that were exclusively mine.

All this stand sharing sounds like communism to me.

There's a map of the stands on a board. Stands are claimed that day by tacking your name to a stands location.

Farther than I'd like

This was one of my concerns too. The guy offering assured me that no one locks down the same stand repeatedly and that there is so much land claiming a stand isn't really an issue.

if there's enough people, card draw works good. everyone draws a card to know priority rank in claiming a stand for next day's hunt.

Sounds like it could be something that is very interesting...particularly attractive.is the fact that thee club is new and the political structure is not yet in tact.

You don't say how many members there will be or how it is decided who gets to stay In The house....

Let me tell you how our set up works and it will give you some insight to how similar your set up is and know that ours has been operating for 27 years this year. Although we just went to bow hunting.

Acreage - 2,900
Members - 16 paying and 2 family landowners
Membership dues- $3300
2 bucks of legal size 18" beam and 15" spread.
1 buck of choice (excessivly large spikes, 4pts or 6pts(bodywieght of 175 or higher)also some will say 6pts huh your crazy but we have a history of some pretty damn big six points.
Several small ponds. no trophies in there but all the 1.5-2 pound fillets you could possibly eat. (you may want to stock up on ketchup if you know what im sayin).
As many doe as you want to slay.
A camp house with ice machine and kitchen, covered skinning rack, covered atv shed, and one large bunk room shared by husbands and wives with two bathrooms.
Stands are chosen the same way with tags hung on your name next to the board.
guest are $25 to hunt plus 75 if legal kill or 300 fine for not meeting criteria.
Sounds like your getting a pretty sweet deal not having to do plots or all that stuff. We still do all our own plots and buy all our own groceries and all that. If your getting in with the right people you may mess around and have a good time.

There will be a 10 member limit. I'll actually be the last member accepted. Sorry, thought I included that in the post.

Basically a very very rich family owns this land. The owner really only cares about turkey and pheasant hunting. He has only given permission to a few people to hunt the property and they are colleagues. They've used the land to bring business clients and the such. They've recently decided to actually establish a club to bring in members who will maintain the game and make it into a great thing. I was lucky enough to be friends with one of the newly offered members and got an invite as well.

I do know 2 people who had previous permission to hunt had their access revoked last month after they were found to be taking smaller deer and riding the atv's all over the property. So they are not afraid to kick you out for abusing the property.

If this was available to me I wouldn't hesitate. Really sounds too good to be true, but if it is you're a lucky fella.

As far as a good club. To me it's all about the personalities of the guys. I've been in a few different clubs. I had the most fun in the club that had the worse deer. Most everyone was on the same page. Was in another "big buck" club as a kid, and I remember the old man was miserable. Too much lying, cutting people off, hunting stands other guys were feeding.

I'd join that club no matter what. You'll figure the other members and the vibe of the club out later.

Great. This is the type of info I was hoping to get. I like the one buck of choice rule. Your club sounds like the type of club we're trying to start.

170 acres a member sounds great if the deer population is good, especially if it comes with lodging. I don't like the community stand system, but could live with it. I would scout up a few back areas to hunt during when deer avoid the established stands in daylight.

Assuming you live within a couple hours, that's a good deal.

This is one of the few deal breakers for me. No ownership of stands. Have some kind of draw so that no one Bogarts the best areas.

I disagree. We do the tag your stand thing. It's very nice. You get to move around. That's all box stands.

If you hang a Lock-on, that's yours.

10 people in 2300 acres. There's always a good spot.

I'd hate to hunt the same stands day in and day out

What part of North Ga? It's hard to find that kind of low pressure around here.

For the others, GA regs are two bucks, 10 does (which is rediculous) and the second buck must be 4 on one side or better.

Northwest. Rome area. Theres no where around here that offers this type of property. I can be at the club house within 45 mins. Like I stated earlier he's a prominent figure in the area, a "blue blood", so the local police and DNR make sure his property is patrolled and taken care of.
