I picked up two new rod and reels today with some Christmas money from Bass Pro.

6.6" carbon fiber Vendetta medium action with a Citica 200hg
and
6.9" carbon fiber Vendetta medium heavy action with a Orra Inshore

The Citica will be for general fishing and spec trout. The Orra will be for reds, snapper, etc.

I believe that I got carried away with what test braid I got. I was more concerned with relative size than actual weight. 50lb (12lb size) for the Citica and 65lb (16lb) for the Orra, both Power Pro.
Are these weights too much? I will be using a leader with both, especially for specs. I fully understand that both are overkill, but is there any negative?

If anyone can improve my two setups, please let me know. I have about $200-$225 in each rig and want to stay around that range.

I use 30lb on everything, but I only red/bass/trout fish with them.

I figured and knew that the 50lb and especially the 65lb were heavy, but cannot figure out why not to use them. The extra thickness will help them not burry into the spool and I will still have the same length as mono.

What action (if thats the correct term) do you use on your rod? The medium seems a bit stiff at 6.6".

For specks and reds i use 20 as my all around braid. Same for Bass unless I am punching heavy cover then I use 65. With medium action rods, yes you went too big. For snapper I think you don't have enough backbone with those rod selections but the line size it about right.

Why just 20?

Plenty strong enough, smaller diameter and castability. Hell, I have 10lb on my spincast and it will throw a mile with a topwater tied on. Not saying the heavier lb won't, I never tried casting over 20 lb.

Fair enough. Length and action seem okay, except for snapper?

Yes, you have 2 nice combos. Perfect for all around freshwater and inshore fishing. The snapper may be a challenge but it is doable. I've been snapper fishing a couple times and our equipment was more heavy duty but we were in 175' of water at the 10 mile rigs in Venice. Once you hooked them you had to get them away from the rigs. If that is how you plan on catching them that is why I think you need a beefier setup.

Vendetta's are good rods. I have 5 of them and only broke one which was my fault.

Thanks for your help. I was going to look at Veritas, but couldn't justify the price.

I will return the 50 and 65 tomorrow and look at 25-35lb.

You're welcome. Keep your receipt. Abu has a good warranty as well (I think it may be for 1 year, can't remember). The one I broke all I had to do was take a picture of the rod and receipt and email it to them. They sent me a new rod.

I have a micro eye Verita and really like it along with falcon coastal or some other falcon rods.
I use chronarch or lews tournament pro for Bass specks and reds. I use 50lb power pro just because the larger diameter/weight is easier to use but have been thinking of dropping down to 30-40lb. I mainly throw spinners, worms, jigs crank baits and speck rigs. All of this works perfect together.

You need bigger gear for snapper. You will snap rods, burn reel gears if the line doesn't snap instantly. The second the line rubs the marine growth on the platform it will pop.

I use 20# Suffix 832 for inshore fishing. I think your rods are a little on the short side. I fish with:
7' ML XF baitcast (Kistler Z bone)
7'6" ML F spin (Dobbins Champions extreme)
7'2" M F spin (13 Fishing Omen Green)

7' M F or XF is a very versatile inshore rod. Maybe that and a MH for bigger fish (I don't fish much for snapper). I dont fish rods under 7' for inshore, so would recommend not having 2 under 7'.

I didnt realize that rods were normally that long. I thought I was fine with length. Will look into this more. Thanks

This. I've gone up to 50, but it just feels to heavy for bass.

Re snapper fishing I use 5'6" med heavy rods with tekota reels spooled with 80# powerpro. Since there's no casting you can use that heavy line with confidence

So, general consensus is to get longer poles?

Replace my 6.5' with a 7', both medium?
Might keep my 6.9' or replace it with a 7' too?

Prolly stringing medium heavy pole with 50lb and 30-35 on medium action pole.

Length can be a bit subjective, I like 7' on spinning rods, I mainly use my 3 baitcasters though, two are 6'9", and the one I use exclusively for topwater is only 6' which I don't see very often. I don't have them in front of me to get the action on them though. Everything is spooled with 30lb braid, inshore saltwater fishing 99% of the time.
