What is a rough estimate of owning a dog?

I'm in the middle of purchasing my first home and I am very excited about having my own place to purchase a dog. I am leaning towards a lab or a retriever from a breeder. The house is close enough to work so that I can check on him/her during lunch every day. I just don't want to jump into too soon without any accurate idea of how much they cost to raise. I figure monthly expenses could be food & vet trips (mostly early on) ... but what else?

In the words of Howard Stern ... "any help helps ... thats why it's called help."

TIA

If lab puppy, hope it will be outside during the day.

Make a rough estimate yourself, then triple it

The early years are the most expensive mainly due to the chewing. Even with plenty of exercise they can be destructive.

Also, I would try to buy a dog that has already had his first few rounds of shots.

Mine is ~15 weeks so I'll help you out on the totals so far.
Kennel/toys $120
Puppy shots plus other vet checkups, flea/heartworm meds- $240

Food- depends on what you feed him. I'm feeding mine proplan sport at $35 for a 37.5#bag.

I'm still driving home for lunch daily which is about 40 miles round trip , but that's about to stop soon.

Keep a bubble in case your dog is an idiot that eats things like diapers that gets lodged in his intestines and an emergency visit to the vet is required. ~$350-$500

Yikes that's rough! Luckily I only work 2.5 miles from the house I'm looking to buy.

Like in one of those cage/dog pen things? And you mean like in the grass or under a patio in the shade? I was always under the impression I could just come let him out in the yard when I get home during lunch.

Don't want to insult your intelligence as you might know this already but lab puppies are notorious for tearing shite up. I.e. Chewing on couch, dining room chairs, etc.

If you get a lab you need to factor in about $1k worth of shoes he's gonna eat. Possibly a sofa, barstools, cabinet doors, and dishes he's gonna break when he jumps up on the counter to eat your food too. Then a 3d deer target he's gonna shred, a cypress swing, a basketball, fence boards, and a plastic tricycle.

My pup hasn't chewed up a single thing at my house. He's kennel trained in the house and I keep an eye on him.

My lab is 2 years old and I've had it since 8 weeks old. She has never done any chewing damage. The key is just make sure they constantly have bones or something to chew on and you won't have that problem.

Roughly 1800 a year for us.

120 lbs of quality food a month
Flea preventative 9 months a year.
Shots we do ourselves.
Rabies and check up once a year at the vet.

Add in whatever my wife spends on toys and whatever we spend on treats for the dogs randomly.

So figure an even 2k a year.

I just got a little nauseated as I typed that...

Edit: add an extra 700 to that for last year when I fenced in their yard... Jesus.

I'm cheap and one thing that scares me about owning a dog is if they do something stupid and need crazy medical treatment, I don't want to spend that on a dog.

My cousin is a single mother to be that doesn't make jack shite and has three huge dogs, each on enough meds to choke an AARP member. She will not give up the dogs.

I buy my dog premium food at $60/mo. Shots are like $125 every couple years. Nothing else

Eta: meds, but idk the cost because I got a bunch free
