Mrs. Couyon and I were on Dauphin Island this past weekend for a short getaway. I talked to a guy getting ready to go out fishing yesterday morning.
He said they were going out about 40 miles and had caught Ajs ,cobia and B-Liners(???)there last weekend. I just got a set of hearing aids, so i may have misunderstood what he said, but Bee-Liners is what I heard. What are those? Any Bama fishermen out there?

Thanks to both of you. I had never heard that name; or maybe had forgotten it.
Why are they called that as if there is a reason for some nicknames?

The man said he just got a hearing aid. He might not have heard of Google. Give him a break just this one time.

Yeah, this isn't the OT. Most of the time you get a quality answer before the smart arse comments begin. Kinda like this thread.

Propagandalf...a little on the snide side for the OB...

It's often better to ask the OB than Google:

1. OB usually has just as good of information
2. OB will have a better grasp upon local nomenclature
3. OB can often offer insights and experiences that Google can not
4. You might learn a new wise-crack in the process, and
5. It's more enjoyable interacting with real people with like interests.

Though I have to admit that link is pretty darn funny...a little snide...but funny.

They look like little red snapper but usually have yellow or red eyes and faint yellow stripes and weigh under 5 or 6 pounds. they are not subject to the current red snapper ban, and tend to kind of swarm around rigs. Used to avoid them like everyone else because of their size, but know to the complete bullshite on red snapper the B-liner rigs are a hop topic just like the Mangrove snapper rigs are.

Maybe so?

We had to deal with this guy earlier in the "I Hate a thief" thread.

Sorry!! I had to do something that involved making money to take Mrs. Couyon on more trips since I posted this morning.

To CoastieGM: your post was right on. You said what I was thinking. To Propa whatever: I actually thought your post was funny, because my first choice for fishing info (in the gulf esp.) is this board. Folks like CaptST and Jab528 know about a lot of cool stuff.
To Choirboy: Thanks for the comment, I laughed. I actually use Google and the Internetz pretty often.I AM older than olegeaut, y'know

To Risefromtherubble. Thanks for the "chili Peppers. I haven't read all the google stuff but glanced at it. Did it refer to B-Liners and why they're called that?
If I don't hear back in about 10 minutes, I guess I'll read it.....

Quote:Vermillion snapper is the right name. They got the name b linners from the commercial fisherman. They would line the outer edge of the fish boxes with them and put the regular red snapper in the middle so that if any spoiled it was the ones on the outside and not the red snappers. Also the lane snapper is another type of snapper. All eat good. I think you will get more meat from the b-linner than a red snapper the same size due to the size of the head on a red snapper. We were just there for the weekend. Didn't get to fish. The people I talked to have a cmp on Dauphin Is. We were getting breakfast at the convenience store there when they pulled up with a 28'?? Grady White boat.
I wanted to go so bad, I could taste it. Did you go out that far to catch them? 40 miles?

we went on a party boat, about 30 people. The deck hand said we were about 25 miles out. We've done this trip 2 years in a row, caught a mess both times.
