Question: with waders, if you capsize how do you keep from going to the bottom?
Water inside of waders is not heavier than the water outside of the waders. If it fills up, getting back into the kayak might be an issue but it's not going to drag you to the bottom.

There was a thread on here a while ago discussing this same topic.

ETA: There are a bunch of youtube videos on the topic.

I still do not understand why you would consider wearing waders for kayaking. To go hunt in yes, but not kayaking. Especially in the savanah area In that puff mud.

To me it just seems like a big regret to use waders in a kayak especially if you are using them often, buying new and just kayaking.

Through the years I have worn wetsuits, waders, spray suits, bibs and top, and dry suits doing every sport imaginable. (Sailing, kayaking, hunting, fishing, messing around, driving motorboats, etc)

After all that time spent in uncomfortable clothes that are just not right for the job or not up to snuff I finally said screw it. I decided that I would buy the right clothes for the job and since I made that choice I have not looked back.

In 2012 I spent over 100 days on the water in my drysuit and enjoyed almost everyone. I am convinced if I had not had the right equipment for the job I would never have spent that much time out enjoying the outdoors.

It's worth it in the long run to get the right gear for the job IMO.

I know you like those dry suits, but they just seem overkill IMO. Waders are easy, I don't use them for fishing because I don't need them, but I've duck hunted out of my kayak and they work fine. All you really need is some lightweight waterproof pants, and layer accordingly. If you're getting your upper body wet while kayaking in the marsh you're doing it wrong, and if you're doing it wrong, nothing a $20 rain jacket won't solve.

What is this?

I am not using the kayak to fish. It's for paddling. I also want to take it into the ocean.

Waders probably are not the best solution for me. I don't want to be that restricted in movement.

If I am mostly going to be using covering of some sort when the air is warm in the spring before the water gets warm and the fall as the water starts to get cool, would a dry suit still be your preference?

Again, thanks to all for the ideas and suggestions.

How many times have you been out in a kayak?

30 times or so? Only in summer

I've never been in what I would call a real kayak. The sit on top is not the same.

I gotcha. I don't find the waders very restricting for the upper body. I think it's worth a shot before you drop a nice chunk of change on a drysuit.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - A Hoover man drowned Sunday in the Little Cahaba River while fly fishing, apparently after his waders took on water and he couldn't free himself.

Shelby County Coroner Diana New on Monday identified the man as Paul Rohrbach, 56. He was pulled from the river just before dark Sunday after hours of searching for him.

quote:

Rohrbach apparently walked out and encountered a drop-off in the water. His waders started filling up with water, and he was pulled beneath the surface.

His friend, whose name wasn't released, tried to rescue him but to no avail. The friend's waders also started filling up with water, but he was able to get out of his waders and then had to run for help because his cell phone had gotten wet. "He flagged down someone and that's how the call came in,'' Edwards said.
