Watched WWL news and heard that a fisherman died in Plaquemines Parish. He was not wearing a life jacket. For the sake of your families wear a life jacket.

I saw the pros do this on MLF. Very smart.

There are a lot boaters that will only wear a PFD when their boat is under power, in 2013 there were 560 boating deaths, 160 occurred while at anchor or drifting not under power.

When my outboard cranks you have to have a life jacket on in my boat.

I'm strictly a kayak boater and sometimes I think that I don't need to wear one because I'm usually in knee deep water for 90% of my trip. But there are those 10% of the times I'm crossing bodies of water like the MRGO or other boat channels and I should absolutely wear them. Gotta get better at it. Be safe fellas.

How do you have an accident while at anchor or drifting?

I always hook my life jacket to the kill switch. I recommend everyone do it. Hook it up at the landing and unhook it when the boat is on the trailer. I just take it off and put it back on in the driving seat

Same here on my boat. Even after I'm at the dock and go get the car and trailer, I still keep it on because I'm going back into the boat. That may sound like overkill but I was talking to a man once at the Rigolets marina who got his trailer walked back to the boat and fell into water as he was trying to get into his boat. He was okay, but like he said, he could have hit his head, fallen into the water and drowned right at the dock.

The point about the kill switch line is well taken. I sometimes forget to wear it. And I wear my jacket( it is an auto inflate) when I stop to fish. I fish a lot by myself also and am getting near 60; I have nearly lost my balance on some occasions so I need to wear it.

Fanny pack PFD's require the user to be conscious. That is one of the reasons we see fatalities from idle boats, on anchor, etc. Stuff happens whether its hitting your head on a Yeti or being run down by a mud boat coming around a corner.

The auto/manual inflates are nice because they are already horseshoed around an unconscious user. However, it still requires the charge to function correctly, or the user be conscious.

I know a lot of people don't utilize the kill switch or PFDs, which is unfortunate. It won't prevent all tragedies but can prevent some unnecessary ones. A close friend of mine in high school was thrown out of the boat and the prop caught him, he was 16.

Read discussion below; 2 dead while not under power. Best example I've seen about how PFD save lives. 2 adults drown without life jackets and 3 small kids all live. Good Samaritan got to kids and helped, but the jackets kept them above water.

Purchase a self inflated with CO. Much less cumbersome. Most come with reflectors, light and whistle. Will inflate upon water contact.

Not only do I not wear one, none are even visable in my boat. I will wear the kill when alone in rough water though. No safety harness in climber either.
