Over the past couple of years, the DW has opened her mind to owning handguns. We were in BR visiting, and stopped by Cabela's. It took a while to sort through the options for her, and work our way from pretty to useful. The compromise was the Walther CCP. Lots of women were buying Saturday, and we got the last one. The slides on some of the others were just too stiff for her.

I've posted before about wanting a 9mm Commander, and I always came back to the Ruger. Well, it was available and at some kind of friends and family discount, so I got it.

Headed to the range this morning- my first range experience ever. The DW was fairly intimidated by the whole process, but did fine. That Walther is a bit snappier than I expected, but I still think it was about the best compromise we could have found. We both love the feel in the hand and all of the controls.

I have to say I am pretty happy with the SR1911, but wonder if the smaller EMP models would not have been better for my hands. Am I supposed to be able to reach the slide release with my strong thumb? A lot of my concerns are from sheer ignorance of handgun use. Also, I'll probably need slimline grips with the mag release cut, as I can't get to it easily either.

Considering the fact that I have maybe 30 rounds through a few different handguns in my life, I was pleased with my results. Pics below.

Go take a safety course at a minimum. Later take an intro tactical pistol class.

DW wants to carry, but won't take the course without me. I'll probably do it for her even though I'll never carry.

Oh, and I don't get the right thumb over the safety thing. That's uncomfortable as hell. Probably just my hands.

Nice groups for someone who hasn't shot pistols much

That CCP is probably the smoothest compact pistol I've ever shot

That's to help ensure that you don't accidentally activate the safety, while shooting, due to the recoil impulse (muzzle flip) of the pistol. (If 2-3 thugs were trying to kill you, it would be bad to accidentally render the pistol inoperative after your first shot.)

If you can train yourself to always keep your thumbs "out of the way" of the slide and all of its components, I wouldn't worry too much about keeping that right thumb (it appears from your target that you are right handed) on the safety. But that is one of the reasons that so many people carry guns w/o manual safeties.

I think most told you this would be the case for subcompact carry pistols. There are plenty of other full sized or compact options for a female with small hands but that CCP would be a decent carry gun. I think the Walther PPQ with the slim grip would be a good option.

Most shooters will use their support thumb to hit the slide release. If you shoot with a thumbs-forward grip the placement should be ideal for it.

But glad you enjoyed your range experience. And I definitely agree with the advice to take a defensive handgun class. Now you know how to SHOOT your handgun but you have to learn how to FIGHT with it. That's what the class does and takes your abilities to a whole new level.

Alx, my Delta Elite did the exact same thing on the 1st range trip. I didn't clean it prior.

After the 1st trip, I took it down, cleaned it thoroughly, put it back together and worked the action. A lot.

Next range trip and everyone since it's been flawless.

If you are referring to my note, that was a reliability joke for the 1911 haters. Mine worked perfectly.

Good buy on that Walther. Nailed it for a first handgun purchase.

The smaller and lighter it is, the more snappy. After a few hundred rounds that goes away as you both wont notice it. Try controlling the recoil a bit with your support hand. 75% of your grip should be coming from that hand.

That or rent a 38 Airweight
.. after shooting that, neither of you will feel the walther.. its like warming up with a donut on a bat.

Ah, gotcha. My other two have never had much issue. One does hate semi-wadcutters but anything else has been perfect

Order a set of low-profile bushings for the grip screws when you order the grips. You'll need them.

Thankfully, the sites I've looked at for those, even eBay sellers, remind you of that

I have a set of VZ Operator 2 grips with the mag release cut in them you can try out. I replaced them for a set of VZ Slim Frags with the same relief cut. Operators are pretty aggressive with how much grip the provide.

After checking my sets of grips, the thumb relief between the standard VZ and the slim VZ grips is exactly the same, only about .080" difference in max thickness between them too. Both VZ grips have about .100" of material where my thumb joint would rest when hitting the mag release while the standard SAI grips have about .250"

That would be cool. I keep going back to their site over and over. I can't decide on a model, much less a color. I really hate the black on black frame of the stock. Thinking one of the greens or reds. Alxtgr.ssp at gmail

The Operator 2's I have are the plain light green G10. Look good on a mil-spec parkerized finish, the Frags are the two-tone dark green and black.

They look better on your gun than they did mine Try them out with some good range time, they are pretty aggressive so you might rub a little skin off at first.

Those grips look great. They also look like you could grate cheese with them
