washing machine help

First of all:
My washing machine started acting up yesterday. It's a 3 year old GE top loader. It fills, but doesn't spin. It also drains fine. But doesn't spin. The whole point of a washing machine is to spin WHY WON'T IT JUST SPIN.
I know enough about things to take care of things around my house, but washers/dryers are far from my expertise. Can anybody give me some ideas? I posted on the OB because we as outdoorsmen are typically more competent than most and generally all life processes. If all else fails, could anybody suggest someone who is fair and quick to come look at it? I live near campus.
I can get the model number later when I'm back home if needed. It's a $400 washer and I'm really not feeling buying a new washing machine.

Check the lid closed button. Mine would fill, but not spin, and then not drain and that was the problem

take the front off and see what's going on in there. The drum is belt drive.
Very easy to remove with a putty knife or small knife.

I'd say the belt broke or the drive motor blew a fuse. Open it up and poke around AFTER YOU UNPLUG IT

It's the safety switch on the lid,
If you don't have kids around the house you can bypass the switch by taking the switch out and connect the wire together.
If you do have kids replace the switch.

Is the tub spinning but not the aggitator or is the tub not even spinning?

The tub isn't even spinning. Word I'm getting from another friend is busted lid switch like hogdaddy said, so gonna check that when I get home. Hopefully that's it.

Could be many things. Could be a busted clutch, could be a timer contact, could be a sock stuck in the drain (but I doubt it).

did you even pop the front off it yet?

First of all: GE machines are cheap and have notoriously poor reliability.
There aren't many working parts to a washer/dryer, but it's worth the money to pay a repair man to look at it.
I would have spent way more time and money trying to fix what turned out to be an unfixable component last year.
There are places in most towns that have used & repaired washers/dryers. They'll run you around $100-150. That's a pretty good stop gap if you just want to kick the can down the road.
There's a place near the corner of Perkins/Siegen that's honest.
You can try Craigslist.... but I'd expect spotty results.

DON'T FOLLOW ANY OF THESE GUYS' ADVICE UNTIL YOU TRY THIS!!
On GE washers, there is a water level sensor which gets clogged up. When mine gets clogged, the washer will fill and drain (somewhat) but will not spin or agitate. Sounds like this is your problem. You can fix it with a coat hanger.

If the belt broke, wouldn't the motor still be spinning?

Yeah looking at it now. I don't have a tester so I can't test continuity between the wires going into the switch, but going to disconnect the switch anyways. If that doesn't work I'll go from there.
Not too sure what I'm looking at as far as the motor goes but the belt is good.

put a jumper in the lid switch wires, close the front up and see if she works then.

Was there any plastic shavings under the machine when you moved it?

Just connected the two wires and it's filling now. It's beeping every 30 seconds or so though like the lid is open so that can't be a good sign hah.
