Was given a 17 ft aluminum jon boat. No motor. Want to find something small and cheap. I used to hate fishing, but went out for the first time in years yesterday with some friends. Had a blast. Now I wanna start fishing. Plus I just like being on the water. Any ideas on how to find a gas motor that is small and cheap? I guess I can stay with an electric trolling motor. It would be very, very slow though.

Call some boat dealers and mechanic shops. They might have something laying around that would fit the bill perfectly. I know some guys will rebuild old motors and sell them off cheap.

I would think you would want at least a 30 on a 17' jon boat. Personally, I would want a 40 or more.

I don't have 90 horsepower money, I only have 10-30 hp kind of money.

Looked at the boat a bit more. It is only rated for a 5hp. Anything over is illegal.

Stick with a trolling motor

That rating doesn't mean shite.

Paw paw has an old 16 foot Jon boat we use for frogging. Max on the plate is 7.5 or 9.9. Either way, we've had a 25 yammy on the back for as long as I can remember. Either the rating is just a suggestion, or it's illegal. It has numbers and a sticker so I don't know about the illegal part.

If it is 17' and only rated for a 5 HP, it must be a very narrow boat,so don't go on any big open water with that one, especially if there is much big boat traffic, and don't overload it.
Also, the HP rating is pretty much just for insurance purposes, you wont get a ticket for having a 10 or 15 HP on it.

My first boat was a long narrow one like that, had an 18 Johnson on it,and would fly.Pretty soon after I got it, took 2 friends out on the river with me,both were pretty big guys. I've got it opened up and we are cruising up river, when one of them goes to the front of the boat, water started coming over the front of the boat and it was about to dive like a dolphin. Filled the boat about 1/2 way with water in just a split second, could have ended very badly, but we were lucky and only had to bail water for a while.

You said it was a jon boat correct? What kind of shitty laws in bama says you can only have a 5 hp? Something is going over my head. Is this a side seat or a center console?

Boat manufacturers put a maximum power rating on their boats,it protects them from being sued, usually it is stamped on a plate somewhere on the boat.

Pretty sure this one won't have a console, you clamp a motor on the back with a hand control.

It is similar to this one. This was belongs to a guy at church but he stores it at my house. He pays for everything, and I supposedly get to use it because I am storing it. He has just never gotten me a motor(the trolling motor doesnt work). This one is a 14'. Which means I was wrong about size. The one I was just given is a 15'.

A 91 yr old lady in my church sold it to me for $1. Supposedly it belongs to her step-son. Except it has been on her property for 14 years, and he has never touched it in that time. Despite that, he flipped out when she sold it to me. She wanted it gone. So now its mine. I am a little more motivated to buy a motor because now it is for my own boat.

Found a guy selling 2 Evinrudes for $125 combined. The one is a 9.5hp, the other a 4hp. 9.5 needs a water pump, the 4 a fuel pump. It was suggested to me that I buy both, and then trade in the 9.5 to a mechanic to get him to fix the 4. Thoughts?
