We are all still in hunting mode. Understandable.

Bass fishing is about to unfold. Years ago I lived around Baton Rouge and fished False River year round.

In late January (long ago) I fished Lake Bruin (northeast Louisiana oxbow like False River).

It was cold, but bearable 40s to 50s (like current conditions). Using a perch pattern 1 oz. Cordell Hot Spot (yep, not 1/2 or 3/4 oz.) I would cast to underneath piers, let bait hit bottom and then slowly reel back while bumping bottom. FYI, Hot Spot is a lipless, sinking bait similar to Rat-L-Trap.

Caught a 7 pounder. Then several 4+ pounders.

Note that False River is further south (probably warmer temps in the shallows near New Roads and underneath the piers).

I know late February/early March is "normal" bass spawning period for mid/south Louisiana.

However, last year was reported to be the "warmest year on record in last 135 years". This year may be similar.

My point is: Bass fishing is about to heat up - don't overlook the start of bass spawning season.

Anyone else have any late January bass fishing stories to share?

Good fishing

The best trip of my life happened in late January, about 6 years ago. Me and my dad went to Toledo, fished up in the Blue Lake area. We got there on a Friday afternoon, and fished for a couple hours before dark. He caught 6 and I caught 1. They were all in the 2-3 pound range. It was pretty common for him to smoke me back then

Well the next mornin we launched at about 8, cause it was still pretty damn cold. It was a slow day, we caught 12 bass all day long. I caught 9 of them, and the smallest one was 3 pounds. I had a 6, two 5s, four 4s and two 3s, but most importantly I had spanked him!

All of the bass were caught on 1/4 ounce Humdinger spinnerbaits. We were slow rolling them in 6-8 feet of water. I had the speed down on that spinnerbait, my dad just couldn't make himself reel it as slow as I was and I was lovin it!

I'm making a bass trip this weekend. Going to try Henderson. Mainly just going to get my boat out on the water for the first time. But I can't go out without wetting a line.

Fished with my brother in a neighborhood pond yesterday and he caught a solid 3.5 pounder, I was thinking the same thing you are. It's always the first thing I do after hunting season.

I remember last year being brutally cold in jan and feb, the spawn definitely happened later than normal

Yes, AboveGroundPool thanks for info. I didn't remember that.

I guess I was just excited by our "warm" weather lately. oleyeller, guys I want to believe in fishing fever. Still, cold or not let's give it a try.

I will admit my excitement was enhanced by my catching a double (two 3 1/2 pounders) on a 1 oz. "Smokey" Hot Spot while trolling in the False River flats north end out of New Roads. But this was very early March many years ago. So you're probably right.

Still, don't pass up any opportunity to "give it a try".

To rballa19 - I fished Toledo many years also. Cast out a 1/2 oz. or so floater/diver (shad or perch pattern) to any shore line this time of year at Toledo and hold on...

I've caught some nice fish in late January. I know you said January fish, but one of my best days was at Toledo Bend with the morning starting off at 28 degrees. Super bowl weekend 2 years ago my buddy and I laid the smack down with some wacky worm action around Indian mounds. They would just follow a rattletrap back to the boat. They were crushing the wacky on the fall.

This past weekend was shitty. Fished a club tourney, and the most bass anyone caught was 3.

Guy who won had 20 pounds, though! A 9, 6, and 4

Tore them up yesterday in the Tchefuncte River using the Alabama Rig by the Madisonville Bridge area. Five bass stringer weighed in at just close to 28 pounds. Best stringer I've ever pulled out of the Tchefuncte and I've fished that River for 35 years. The shad are thick right now in that area as they always are this time of year. There was another boat fishing not to far from us who pulled in a bass that 8.7 fishing.

I'm headed back this evening after work to light that area back up again. We caught 20 but they were all big, fat, and hungry. I think today will be an insane bite based on the weather and conditions--so long as the boat traffic doesn't cause the bait to scatter it should be On like Donkey Kong.

I would start around Bayou DeZaire mouth and fish all the way to the barges south. Focus on the drop-offs and structure in the river (especially the Bridge pilings). Use your electronics to find the big shad bait balls in the area.

I just didn't know where the river itself was, I'd never heard of it. I just googled it, and I live on the other side of the state
