White Marlin Open 2021 Day 1:
Heard on the radio a boat was sinking, coast guard was coming and we didn’t see anyone we probably weren’t near them. Got their coordinates, reeled in everything and 3100 horsepower full speed ahead went and realized how close we were. They lost the fight on a blue marlin, they lost their boat and their personal belongings and fishing gear, but we did save them! And their beer. So we fed them and added a few to our amazing team for the day… terrifying and wonderful all at the same time. So glad everyone is safe. Captain William Chapman is a hero!! Let’s go “Fishbone”. #WhiteMarlinOpen White Marlin Open

Doesn't look too rough to be backing down.
Wonder what happened?

I’m not a sailor so just how does this happen on basically calm seas?

Easy to recognize and overcome. Most kick on automatic

But you literally just have to drive forward

Weird situation

I’ve read that when these guys are aggressively “backing down” on a fish and flooding the back of
The boat, if a hatch or door is open you can sink the boat pretty quick.

Have no idea if that’s the case here or if that’s even true. But the few IG videos I’ve seen where they do just that makes it seem like a legit danger.

Terrible situation, but props on the sinking boat for having a legit life raft.

Really easy to sink a small boat that way.

I fished white marlin out of Va Beach a few years ago. I was fighting one and they backed down so hard the water was hitting me in the face and I couldn't see what was happening. This was just a regular outing, not a tournament. Not much fun.

i mean technically if they had beer and the water from the ice, they could have made it two weeks in that raft. good job

Never fished billfish so someone please explain why backing down a fish is so critical. Keeping the back of the boat pointed at the fish I get but why everything else?

Since they were white marlin fishing they may have had lighter gear so they had to back down hard to prevent from being spooled by a big blue Marlin.

Ok. It’s seems like high risk low reward. How fast could you really go in reverse anyway.

Trying to keep the line in the reel. If he's pulling drag with the drag locked down there's nothing else you can do.
