Bad timing for guys who like to surf fish on Elmers east end. Glad to see its for a restoration project and not because assholes in F250s like to play in the surf.

Timing is everything, and sometimes the state's could hardly be worse. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority announced Thursday they will close the east side of Elmer's Island to vehicular traffic beginning March 21 to continue construction on the largest coastal restoration project in state history.

Elmer's Island, one of Louisiana's few drivable beaches, is popular with shore-bound anglers when speckled trout show up in the surf in the spring and summer.

Charlie Melancon, secretary of the department, said he recognizes the timing isn't the best.

"We understand the inconvenience to fishermen and recreational users," he said. "However, once completed, this restored beach will offer visitors a pristine recreational area for many years to come."

The construction is part of the Caminada Headland Beach and Dune restoration project, which will rebuild a 13-mile stretch of beach and dunes from Belle Pass eastward to Caminada Pass. The project is utilizing 8.4 million cubic yards of sand barged in from Ship Shoal, a site located 30 miles to the southwest.

The $200 million project is the largest ever constructed by CPRA, and is critical to the state's restoration goals, according to Johnny Bradberry, chairman of CPRA.

"This barrier area is very important for protecting the port, the road and the homes just north of the beach and marsh," he said.

The department will open a parking area at the end of the beach's access road to allow anglers to leave their vehicles and hike to the beach's popular eastern area. The western section of the beach will remain off-limits to both vehicular and foot traffic.

The department anticipates the work on the eastern part of the island will stretch through early fall.

State-owned Elmer's Island is located just to the west of Grand Isle, near the end of Highway 1.

He's obviously never been to Elmers.

This is not necessarily bad news, it's still open to foot traffic. It should weed out some of the trash.

Yep, plus I'll get a ton more fishing done now that I won't have to feel guilty about leaving dickheads stuck in the sand.

I was telling a buddy we can just park on the side the road, toss the yaks in and make the paddle out to the pass. I'd bet aside from boat traffic we'd be about the only people there.

It says the crosshatched section is by foot only. So I would assume you could still take the access road you just won't be able to drive along the beach.

Because most people are shitheads who tear up the beach and stick their big stupid trucks in the surf. With restricted vehicle access maybe now all the mouth breathing Jason Aldean fans will stay home in stead of going to Elmer's and getting ripshit wasted and trashing the place.

Park and walk is the way it should be. It would save everyone a lot of headaches.

I wonder if the state ever paid the Elmer family for taking over the road access to the beach? I remember paying $7 per car when the family controlled it. The family wanted $7 million from the state, then Jindal declared it public access to public seashore. So much for private property rights.??

Wouldn't it be a right of way issue? Eminent domain? I might not be using those words in the right way but I wouldn't think a private land owner could restrict access to public property.

I'm looking at you Fourchon beach

I have never really seen anyone tear up the beach, I think most people behave pretty well. I have no problem with people getting ripshit wasted, it makes for some good people watching. The littering does bother me though.

Same, the occasional kids doing donuts but that's about all. The trash is probably some of the worst I've seen on public land, I mean people and actual littering. The littering is some of the worst I've seen on public land.

A few kids doing doughnuts is a few too many. Especially with all the drinking that goes on out there. The garbage I feel goes hand in hand with the drinking. Most of the trash comes from people getting hammered and not giving a shite.

Some asshat went full retard on my wife and I for smoking a joint. The whole time he was going on his rant he was holding a beer bong that guy.

Without vehicle traffic, I will actually visit the beach this year.

Kids need a place to cut up and there isn't much damage they can do out there. A few donuts isn't hurting anyone.

I don't think the drinking and littering go hand in hand, I think it's more just about the quality of people in general that are out there. You could ban booze and I still think you would have the trash.

I think it's kind of funny you're condemning the drinking while smoking dope. Pot and Kettle...

Takings law breh, if the family hasn't been compensated yet rest assured they will be. State is required to issue "just compensation" for private land they take. No idea what market value is for that area but that's usually near what the compensation is

Good. Can you imagine the freaking idiots doing donuts on the dune they're building? Project looks good so far though.

Right up until they drop their truck off in the surf, or run over someone.

I'm not condemning the drinking. I'm condemning the drinking and then driving around on the beach. Other than that I'm simply pointing out that some drunk dritbag took it upon himself to go all DARE officer on us while shithoused and holding a beer bong in his hands. I just thought it was funny. Nothing more.
