I have a couple of cracks in the hull of my boat and am probably going to replace the boat. It's an old aluminum flat and I was thinking about replacing the boat.

I was wondering the advantages to a slight V versus just typical flat bottom.

Also any custom boat builder recommendations within reason around Ascension parish would be much appreciated.

What size boat are you looking for?

The only custom flatboat company I know of is Custom Flat in Violet,LA(near Chalmette). I have a 20ft boat of theirs that is 15+ years old. They make great boats.

According to what you are doing. I use mine mostly for backwater adventures. Duck hunting, frogging and things as such. That is the reason I prefer a slight V so I can bounce off of trees instead of hitting them flat.

i always felt that some v in the hull would cut waves a little better,,, like on the missasippy.

Depends on what you wanna use it for as to the v hull. I say go ahead and get the v hull. The difference in draft if any I think would be negligible. But you will be glad you have that V if you have to cross some chop.

As far as custom aluminum. I know of 3 in ascension but you are gonna be paying top dollar. Gaudets, American Aluminum. And the one on airline that use to be Lobells (not sure if he was bought out) but they are all still in business.

15 ft is the length of my current boat. I'm trying make the boat close to the same setup as the one I have since I would like to use my current motor on the new one.

I use it for fishing mostly with the occasional duck hunt and frogging trip.

Go see Casey (sp) at sportsman fabrication in Morgan city. You won't be disappointed.

Will the slight V change the stability of the boat much? Just trying to weigh out all the pro's and cons of it.

For the better I would guess.

while still or moving?

V will be more stable while under way but not when stationary.

How big of a difference do you think the slight V will make while stationary? Negligible?

It isn't negligible but it won't be that big of a deal.
