Well I guess not. If I read your story correctly, the dude had already shot your mom. I'm sure it took a lot of restraint for your dad not to go hunting after him. If someone shot my wife, I'd turn into a fireball.

You read correctly.....dad had to make sure mom was OK.....get kids to safety and try to dial police. This was before cell phones were common and our neighbors don't live close other than the house across the street where the perp was.

I had to pull my gun on a wild hog and an alligator that was getting too close to my dog. I've never had to pull it on a human being.

i got one...

so i was asleep and at 4 in the morning my gf woke me up and said she thought someone was in the house. we listened for a second and definitley heard a footstep. I grabbed my XD-45 and told the lady to call the cops. I put one in the chamber and yelled out that the police have been called and i've got a gun, gtfo of my house. right after that i opened my bedroom door expecting to see someone right there, they had already started running off so i chased them down the stairs and out of the house. didnt shoot or chase them down the street because they were running away. as much as i would love to pop a cap in a burglars arse i probably wouldnt be too legally protected by shooting someone in the back as they were running away. they had already gotten my TV out of the house

cops eventually showed up about 20 minutes after we called them (in nola) and then accused us of stealing our own tv for insurance money (dont have renters insurance, ha!) and the cop told me i was lucky he didnt shoot me (even though they knew i had a gun) we had to walk out of my house with our hands on our heads, gotta love the NOPD! i informed them that they should probably do some police work and check the rest of the house because i had not gone into my spare bedrooms yet. oh tehy couldnt "investigate" because it was dark, oviously nothing stolen was recovered and the cops never gave a shite

I had to let a guy in the Lowes parking lot know I was carrying, but I didn't pull the gun.
That was the moment I realized that if you are going to carry a gun you can't run your mouth.

I also think I'm even more likely to avoid sketchy areas now that I carry. I really don't want to have to shoot somebody at a gas station.

Your first mistake was warning the dude. That's why he bolted. Should have point the gun at his face and yelled "stop or I'll shoot."

If he stops, wait for the cops. If he runs, shoot.

I'm sure any HD class instructor will tell me I'm dead wrong, but it's the principle of stealing from me that I can't stand and I don't trust nor do have much faith in the police. Just my $0.02.

Sucks that it ended up the way it did, but you are better off not shooting.

This is where I find issues with the story

its funny, anytime i mention this story i get 20 people saying what they would have done and what i did wrong. I assure you that until you are in a situation like that you really have no clue how you will react. I'm ex military, young, in-shape dude and i did what i thought was best for me and my SO. If he stayed there after i alerted him, i would have 0 issue with shooting

I probably would have done the same thing. You never know how many there are until it's time to spit lead.
