Looks like my big downstairs unit is in its last days. Blowing cold air but the blower doesn't seem to be blowing as hard as it used to. How much am I looking at for a system to heat/cool about 1,400 sq ft? One vent in the kitchen, dining, bedroom, bath, laundry, and two in the living room. I may want to add a couple more but have full basement access and ductwork. I'm not at home now but I can check the old one if there's anything on it that can help with estimates.

They still make parts for the old systems.

Have the A-coil cleaned, and maybe the duct work.
The way to simple thing is to change the filter.

Yeah I'm getting someone to service it hopefully tomorrow but last year when I had that done the guy told me I could probably nurse it another year or two but the age of it probably warrants replacement. I keep the filters changed every 2-3 months and just did that a couple weeks ago. Saturday afternoon it was fine but today the place is burning up.

We looked at doing this not too long ago seemed like for a good energy efficient system for both inside and outside units plus installation, balance and duct clean it was anywhere from $1000 to $1300 per ton

Depending on the tonnage needed, new a/c is expensive. We got a great deal at about $8,000 on a new unit three years ago, and that was the low quote. If you can fix it for $1,500 or less, fix it.

I recently replaced both the inside and outside 2 ton for a 1000 sq ft rental property for $3950, I can't remember the brand right now but it was mid-upper tier. I got 5 quotes and 3 were high $4000s and the 5th was like $5500. I think the rule of thumb is 600 sq ft per ton, so you probably need a 3 ton maybe a 2.5 so tack on another whatever probably $300-500.

A buddy deal for a complete 4 ton inside and outside was $4500. Labor was only $200 for his helper.

check the air temp...it should be about 12 or 15 degrees cooler than room temp. also, go outside and see if the big line coming out of the unit is cold enough to sweat. if both of those are true, then you do have "cold" air coming out and I would just get someone out to figure out why it is not blowing.

if you do in fact need a new unit, I would probably put a 3 ton in that place and in my experience, that would run about $5K - $6K

Looks like it is freezing up at the coils. Saw some sweat and frost on the air handler last night when I got back home. I'm just running the fan on it now to thaw it out. Got a service call for tomorrow, and I'll know the damage more then.

I paid about $4000 for a 4 ton unit a few years ago for about the same sq footage

I changed my filter the other day, and noticed an immediate difference in air flow, and especially noise. I apparently let the old one go to long.

The wife asked if we got a new AC.

do not let someone install a Goodman unit at your place.

Holy shite. 14 seer is the new energy rating which has made prices go up $200-$300, but I've never paid near $3900 for a 2 ton unit.

That's usually a sign of low coolant.

Someone else mentioned cleaning the air handler coils.

This could cause freezing up too.

If you can reach in and use a camera to see how dirty the coils might be, you might have N easy fix.

You can buy large aerosol cans of foaming coil cleaner that can be sprayed on and not require rinsing.

Cheap and easy,
assuming you have access.

I'm getting a tune up and coolant today. Found a Groupon for a service call. I do have access to it, but I've never felt comfortable messing with A/C besides cleaning the outside unit and changing filters. I'm hoping it helps and I can at least get another year or two out of it.

Our evaporator coils inside developed a decent leak and we were having to get refrigerant at least once a year. That was an R22 system and it wasn't too bad to get it refilled in the beginning, but it got expensive quick. I believe we used to pay around $70 to have it filled 5 years ago, but it had gotten up to almost $300 2 years ago. Instead of paying over $1000 to replace the evaporator coils we opted for an entire new 410 system which is substantially less than R22 and more efficient.

It was something very easy to fix, and I feel like more of an idiot for not checking. It has been raining a bunch, so the last time I looked at the outside unit was a couple nights ago. Running fine, so I shut off the A/C and ran the blower, hoping to thaw it out. The switch/relay outside was broken and the outside unit kept running. It is down under our deck, and we're a floor up from that, so not real easy to hear it running from inside. He replaced that, did a tune-up, and thawed out the coils inside, which was what I was trying to do just running the fan, not knowing the outside unit was still running. I'm only out $200 and the air is blowing cold again. All the ice was blocking air flow which is why I had noticed it wasn't blowing as hard.
