Currently have a riptide 80 that has been a nightmare and has ruined my last fishing trip this last Saturday. I AM a minn Kota man for sure....I believe I just got a bad unit....it's been rebuilt twice once up top and once down below....I'm looking for a bow mount unit with foot control...brain tells me an I-pilot, my wallet says otherwise....my riptide was a tiller handle, I want foot control or key fab style....anchor feature would be nice....minn Kota has soooooo many different models....18' xpress center console with 90 yammy, cause I know that will be a follow up question....and yes, I do SOME saltwater here and there....any recommendations? Where is the best place to purchase, as well?

Thanks!

If you fish shallow or places that have a lot of stumps get a Fortrex if you fish out in the middle of the lake get an iPilot.

My Minn Kota Maxxum 80lb Thrust is 11 years old and never been serviced. My brother and I fished 10 hours in strong winds yesterday and it was still going strong. I wont ever own any other brand.

Maxum was one model I looked at...it's hard to differentiate what separates all the models and then they add versions.....

I believe the Fortrex has a better and stronger bracket than the Maxxum but I cant tell you how many stumps I have hit with mine and it has never faltered once.

I know the trolling motor debate goes round and round, but I had a Riptide for 11 years and never had a single issue with the motor. It was fished in only saltwater and fished very often (4-5 days a week during the summer). I bought a Motorguide when the MK wiring finally crapped out, and the plastic head broke within a few weeks. The motor was powerful and worked fine, but the materials were crap. I'll never buy another Motorguide after that.

I have a freshwater Terrova iPilot on my boat right now and it's been going strong in saltwater for two years with no issue.

4 years into a Minn Kota on our Nautic Star and its a huge piece of shite. Plastic breaks, handle is all jacked up, paint chipped off, etc. It gets the job done but I'm not really impressed with it TBH,

This is not the first time I have heard of someone having issues with the Riptide 80 LB thrust trolling motor. I have been told (strictly hearsay) that there is an inherent problem with the 80 and that the motor overheats and the brushes malfunction causing the motor to fail. Again this is hearsay, but this problem does not seem to be an issue with other Minn Kota motors. I have the Minn Kota 36 volt with 112 pounds of thrust and have had very few issues with it after four years of use.

We've had the Riptide 80 going on three years. No issues yet.

That's me. Haven't used it enough to form an opinion. On the jon boat I basically just putzed around the cove with it a couple of times to hit some good fishing spots in the cove away from the dock. Last weekend we were working on the Pontoon boat and I redneck engineered a place to mount it on the bow of the pontoon with a 2x6 some wood screws and a couple of clamps so I could move the pontoon across the cove to a friend's ramp to work on the motor out of the water. Moved the pontoon pretty good. We even took it half way across the lake with 4 adults a 7yo and 3 dogs using only trolling motor power. I never put the bottom half of the outboard back on the pontoon since we had the wrong water pump so we would have been paddling back if/when the trolling motor failed. 55# moved the pontoon pretty good going backwards. Ran around 40 minutes on the starting battery and had plenty of juice left. Every so often somewhere between speeds 2 and 3 on forward and reverse it will hit a spot that gives full thrust if you have the telescoping handle pushed all the way in. Easy fix was just leave the handle pulled out. Chinese quality!
