First off I appreciate all the help that people on this board gave me over the last month about buying a rifle from a personal seller who lives in a different state. Well I drive up to Memphis tomorrow for work and will be purchasing the rifle and having FFL transfer so I can drive it back across to Atlanta without breaking any laws.

My question now is that I will be in Memphis for two nights for work and will be picking up this rifle tomorrow. The hotel I stay at is valet parking and the thought of leaving an expensive rifle in the trunk seems like a horrible idea to me (especially in Memphis).

Is there are word to the wise on how hotels view you bringing an unloaded rifle (in a case)? Would it need to be locked in a hard shell case? Appreciate the guidance.

Secondly when I am driving the rifle back (through Miss and Bama) do you have to have it locked in a case in the trunk? If you get pulled over are you supposed to tell the officer that you have a firearm in the car or only present that if asked?

Just put it in a case and bring it to your room. I have done this many times.

you can look up the laws, but locked in the trunk, unloaded and separated from ammo should cover you.

grey area here for a lot of folks, but not really the law. I'd mention it, if you have to get out of the vehicle or you have anything other than a routine stop.

The rifle comes with a softsided case so I am trying to figure out if I need to bring along a hard shell. (The softsided does look black and scary)

Are we talking about having the ammo in the cabin of the car and the rifle in the back? Or are we talking about both in trunk but in different containers?

I would keep them in separate compartments. Ammo up front with you

The semantics of all this has been eye opening.

Having driven from Louisiana to florida and Tennesee multiple times with a rifle. I have never had a rifle in a hard case. I have never had the ammo/separate from the rifle. I have just walked into hotels and gone to my room with my rifle in an eberlestock gunslinger pack.

I have also never been pulled, didnt even see a cop drive by when I hit a deer in Florida.

Do I recommend you travel the way I travel? Thats up to you, I was traveling to some long range shooting matches and was pretty much armed to the teeth, so there is that. I did bring my guns in every night. While I wasn't hiding them, I wasn't jumping up and down screaming hey look at me. The hotels never said a word, didn't care. I dont think Miss and Bama require those things.

Is the rifle really and more secure in your hotel room?

I'd see if I could push the pick up date back a couple of days so i just have to pick it up and head home and not have to worry about storing it.

Putting my "Do not disturb" hangy up makes the room equivalent to Fort Knox.

I will say I would rather worry about storing a rifle than I would having cash on me in Memphis.

Tomorrow is the only day that the seller could meet at the gun shop. I guess the shop could hold it for me for a couple days?

1. I have never had an issue with a hotel. I always use one of their luggage carts, and roll everything right thru the lobby.

2. You don't mention whether or not you have a CCW permit. If you do, you may qualify for an "exemption" to the following Alabama regulation:

A person may lawfully transport a firearm, including a handgun, from one state in which they are legal to possess
to another state without a permit as required under Alabama law, provided the following conditions are met:
? The firearm is unloaded.
? Neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible
from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle.
? In case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver's compartment, the firearm and
ammunition shall be in a locked container other than the glove box or console.
Title 18 U.S.C. section 926A

3. I don't think you'll have any issues in Tennessee, Mississippi or Georgia. Alabama is one southern state with the restrictive laws.

ETA: www.handgunlaw.us is a good resource for CCW laws.

It's pretty sad that this is what we have come to.

I remember the good old days when I was in high school and I drove around LA, MS, AL, TX with shotguns and deer rifles lying all over the backseat of my truck with not a second thought in the world about them. Oh yeah and the good old days I'm talking about were in the early 2000's

shite we even had them in there when we went to school. Nowhere else to put em when we went from a jump woodie shoot straight to first period religion class....

Agreed, I can remember having a 410 in the gun rack in the back glass of my truck at school. We used to hunt before was and right after school. I do remember the principal coming and getting me out of class my junior year to bring my shotgun home because somebody made a big deal out of it.

In Memphis, you probably need the gun with you for protection.

eh, depends on where you are.

South and north, screw the gun. You may already be dead.

Downtown is fine
East is the best.
