Topwater Bluegill Fishing Advice

Want to try using topwater lures for catching bluegill/bream. I've tried a fly rod and would prefer my ultralight with some type of topwater lure. Suggestions appreciated.

Go back to the fly rod.
The small white popper has slayed thousands of bream for me.
Not exaggerating either...I have had the same Cortland Fly 5/6 wt rod since 1993 and changed the line out 5 times.....thousands of bream caught. They bend the rod.
Only about 100 largemouth bass caught, but bream or bluegill are plentiful and pleasant to catch.

Use your ultralight rigged with a small Betts Bubble with your favorite fly trailed about four feet behind. IT works.

The bubble is exactly what I've been looking for.

Isn't the bubble just a sliding cork? I don't understand how this is top water?

Go back to the fly rod and use a Bream Getter... they eat that thing up...

Definitely go with a floating bug of some sort. We used to slay some bream with Miss Prissy's and other similar floating poppers. They're suckers for anything bug/critter-like wiggling on the surface
A fly rod is ideal but we did it as kids for many years with regular spinning rods. Watch for trees behind you when loading up that back cast

The ol bream getter. When I was a kid, I walked many a creek in Washington Parish slaying bream with that bait. "Fly fishing" my mini cast.

I prefer the black or orange.
Also, nothing like having a catfish hit the top of the water to eat that spider. You just think that a bass is a fight on a fly rod.

That bream getter has caught me 3000 bream no doubt

I messed around last year with using live crickets on top water. Just use light tackle and most of the time they will stay on top of the water and swim. Them perch can't stand it.

When we are fishing in the pond, I always take a cricket and throw it out on the water. If it gets hit within a few seconds, I get the fly rod. It if swims back to the bank, I try something else.

The bream in my pond haven't been too active. I've tried feeding pellets and I get a few but not many. I'm sure it will heat up the next couple of weeks

Suggestions appreciated.
I suggest we go fishing soon. I'm sure my little boy would love to spend time with his nanny also. So bring her too.

We usually start catching them around 3/15, but this jacked up weather might put that off for another week.

I second the fly rod option.
For ultralight though,
Bubble and fly (adams or small wooley bugger or woolly worm is deadly). Small pulls and then let fly sink then repeat.
Tiny torpedo just like working a torpedo for bass.
Without a swivel or weight, rig either a small plastic crappie tube body or a small curly tail grub on a small baitkeeper hook. Use a constant retrieve or stop and go.
Small floating Rapala minnow. Work like jerkbait for bass only slower.
Any of the REBEL small diving insect imitations (grasshopper, catalpa worm, bumble bee). very slow stop and go
Any of the CREME or BURKE pre rigged small soft plastic baits (frog, hellgrimite, cricket, hopper) Super Slow
Cutie pie or cutie spin (these are weighted) constant retrieve with rare pauses

Yeah, the water is still pretty cold and it'll take a couple weeks of warm weather to heat it up any.
Seems like last year's prespawn and spawn got all jacked up by some late cold fronts. Hoping this year is better

I'd forgotten the name of that bait. Appreciate you remindind me of it. WM used to carry it, but stopped doing so some years ago. A fly rod is nice to use, but I've used top waters and spinning reels w/ light weight line to catch bream for many years. I like to tie the top water about 18-24" behind the float. The "Bream Getter" and others already mentioned are good, but through the years I've also used whatever fly is in season for bait.

I use a small swivel on a popping fly with my ultralight so that the fly sinks slowly. Has worked for me since I was a kid
