Have an 09 tundra trd with the OEM bilsteins... have 82k on it and pretty sure I need new shocks.
Should I take it to a dealership or a local place? also should i just replace with the same thing or upgrade to maybe the 5100s or just a better shock? I have a boat and may tow a trailer every now and then.

It's a pretty easy job. Just unbolt 8 things. You can order from e-schocks or shock warehouse

It's a very simple DIY.

Doesn't seem like those would go bad in that short of time. Those are my favorite shocks and I have ran them offroad very hard and for 10 years or so.

just doesn't feel like its driving the same

I know they are a little stiff, but they don't seem to be going over things as well. Is there a way to tell for sure? I don't think they are leaking or anything...

Not really any way to check per se. You might be able to feel it, or you can take off the old shocks and compress and let them expand

i'd assume if they don't expand quickly that they may be bad? don't have a lot of experience with shocks...

If they expand or contract quickly, they are bad. If they compress and don't expand, they are bad. It should be a controlled compression and expansion

I'll add that you can remove your rear shocks much easier than your front shocks. Test one or both rear shocks, if they are bad, get 4 new ones. Get aftermarket shocks, bikstein, rancho, Fox, etc. Put the rears yourself and only pay $100-150 for fronts at alignment shop.

Not trying to tell you what to do, but I have changed several sets of shocks throught the years and honestly, never felt a damn bit of difference in the ride or handling of a vehicle afterwards...

the way to test shocks is to stand on the bumper and bounce the vehicle as hard as you can...when you jump off, the vehicle should only spring back to its normal position and not bounce at all...basically, you want the "bump" to be dampened out immediately...

You've probably never had any that were actually shot. When they're all the way gone it's a horrible experience.

One of the front ones on my new truck snapped the bottom mount completely off of the shock body. I heard it clunking around one day

Slightly off topic, but I went to get an alignment a few months ago and they said they couldn't do it because one of my shocks was bad. Is this true?

Never heard of that one. I guess it could be true but I doubt it. Shock doesn't hold the truck or wheel in any position. Just keeps the tire planted to the ground as much as possible when its moving around up and down from bumps and things like that in which helps with ride comfort.
