I'm north of Destin, about 15 miles south of the Alabama line. Shell, I love the image of the young gopher.

My future herpetologist.

Spring is here, well, I it never really was winter here. Time to revive the herp photo thread!

I dusted off my camera this past weekend and went out. It was a bit cool, but the first piece of tin I flipped had two garters. I found one more under another piece.

I left that area and went looking for Timber rattlers, but it had gotten cloudy and I struck out on those.

When discussing the weather over the weekend with my kids they stated that I always bring home snakes during turkey season, and this year they want to keep one. They have an aquarium ready to go with a Barbie bed and other crap for the snake to play on.

Sounds like they're ready to go.

rub some mice on a barbie and see if you can get it to coil around one.

Caught this black mamba today (although it might be a black racer - I didn't let it bite me to see if I'd die to properly identify it). No fire required. The way he was curled, I actually thought it was a rubber snake at first. Some kids put a rubber snake back on the trail a while back and I've been fooled before. Walked right up to it and realized it was real. Didn't even take off, my dog and I just walked right up to it and I grabbed it. Easiest black racer catch I've ever made - and certainly the most docile I've ever handled. Second snake this year - caught a little ribbon snake in the yard a few weeks ago.

Can't believe it wasn't striking like mad. The ones I've been around have been mean as shite.

I was surprised. I've caught one black-masked racer in my life that didn't bite (and I've caught a LOT of those). This is the first black racer I caught that wasn't mean as crap.

Nice work!

I got bored yesterday and decided to get outside. I took my camera but wasn't expecting to find any reptiles. We had snow during the night, and highs only in the low 50's. But, I did come across another garter.

Sitting in a stand this weekend in Oakwood Texas pig hunting. The feeders out in front of me and to the left and right is patches of trees. I'll look to the right and I see something on the trunk of the tree and think that looks out of place. I'll look through my binoculars and see it's a Treefrog that is different than the ones i usually see. So I take my phone in my binoculars and get it lined up to snap a picture.

Then I decide to look back out the front window to see if any thing is at the feeder… It was at this time I realized that I was not the only one in the forest looking at something that looks out of place.

I suck in every ounce of air in Texas I love that kind of stuff sitting in the stands...look back and forth at nothing then surprise! I can tell it's not one that I need to worry (Texas rat) about right away by the head so I decide to do a photo shoot LOL.

After a few moments he was unimpressed with my picture taking skills and decided to go long his way. Slithered along the windowsill of the side of the box stand on to the roof and into the trees above.

Walking to another Stand, a buddy of mine was showing me where it was, I asked him if he had seen any moccasins up here. It look like a perfect area thick woods, ponds, muddy pig holes, so on. About two minutes later I saw this guy sunning himself and I immediately thought son of a bitch there's one right there. Upon further inspection it was just a diamondback water snake. The guy with me is terrified of snakes so we didn't stick around.

Cool finds. The rat snake wanted to be friends.

Your moccasin appears to be one of the Nerodia water snakes. Probably one of the plain-bellied subspecies.

Yea it was, diamondback. With the sun hitting it it all I could see was heavy body and keeled scales at first. The rat snake in the stand was so awesome lol. The reaction to the pic makes me smile every time when I show people who don't like snakes quite the same as I

Oh, my bad, I missed where you said it was a diamondback.

I know what you mean. For some reason, my fb friends hardly ever "like" my snake photos. Most of them only like puppies.

Went to a reptile show yesterday, and it was the first "hot " show I've been to. Lots of good stuff - Gaboon Vipers for $125, Puff Adders for $75, regular and albino Monacled Cobras from $125-225...They also had a couple Green Mambas, a Forrest Cobra, Green Tree Vipers...I thought the venomous specimens would be under lock and key, but nope - there's a Green Mamba in a small plastic container sitting right on the table with kids poking at it. I wanted to snatch up a baby Gaboon Viper so freaking bad, but the price didn't include a divorce attorney. Gaboons are just the most amazing creatures. I've kept snakes in the house before, but the wife wants no part of a Gaboon. If they had an Eyelash Viper there, I don't think I could have resisted the urge though.

I'd have a hard time passing up an eyelash viper as well, although we can't keep non-native hots in AL. My wife has put her foot down when it comes to venomous. I've never really gotten serious about getting any, but it crosses my mind from time to time. If I ever made the leap, it would probably be a nicely-colored timber rattler. But, then I consider the issues with hots. Day to day stuff would be no problem. But, removing stuck sheds and things like that become a lot more intense than it is with the nonvenomous stuff. I guess if I ever did it, I'd have to have a heated and cooled, detached building.
