Man those LMF pictures are awesome. I will be heading up there with my fly rods in tow for the first time in a few weeks. Is there area you happen to catch those fish called Spillway Creek?

Yes sir all of those pictures are from spillway creek. Fish it, do not fish that cattle pen by the bridge/fly shop, neck to neck with people. Spillway creek you can hike and get away from people.

Keep driving straight past the fly shop into the park quite a ways and you will reach dead end/concrete barricades. This is the bottom of spillway creek where the bridge washed out during the flood.

I fished right there early (7am) and there was only 1 other person, we had that hot bite for about 15 mins then we had slow but good consistency after that. At about 9 or 10 when all the topwaters get outdoors the easy spots get crowded.

I went back to the same spot that afternoon to hike and it was crowded with 0 fish being caught. I hiked almost all the way up spillway creek to the dam. Just below the dam about 1/2 mile there was a group of fly fishermen wearing them out.

Thanks man appreciate it, I can't wait. Yea from doing research my plan is to fish spill way creek. Seems most people don't like the faster moving water. It'll be a fun time no matter what. Taking the wife and the pup with us for 4 days.

Do you need help finding flies? There are some great links in the OP.

Yes I am clueless, slightly overwhelmed. I plan on starting at my pond full of bream, it looks like small poppers are the go-to?

Are there favored brands, colors for certain conditions, etc?

Clueless on this too. I am familiar with the blood knot from fraditional bass fishing, I will look into that for the connection.

Don't overthink it. What sort of things do you know bream and bass to eat? Bugs, minnows, worms. Start with some simple variety packs. Just b/c it's fly fishing doesn't mean the bream all the sudden become picky eaters. Experiment with a couple different ones.

There are endless videos on youtube, orvis website, etc... Start watching 30 min at a time and you'll pick up a ton.

You can fly fish for bream with an indicator (like a cork) and a fly that sinks. You may need to add weight to sink it slowly. Easier than fishing a live cricket.
Kid had us using one called a break killer.

I started with a popper yesterday at my local urban lake and didn't get a hint of action. Decided to tie on a clouser minnow and caught 6 bluegills in 20 minutes. The lesson being to change it up if what you start with isn't working. And good luck!

i tie the tippet to my leader using a double surgeon's knot. but if you're not worried about a super delicate presentation, and don't need that super small diameter tippet, you can tie your fly right onto a brand new leader. when it starts to lose line from snags and from changing flies, that's when i typically tie the tippet on.

of course, if you're fishing a big river that demands long leaders, you'll tie the tippet on for that added length, but not too long - anytime i've added a tippet longer than 2 feet or so i usually lose the fish.

Yep got plenty of space in my backyard with a wide open flooded ditch behind it.

I have been watching videos the past few days. Ready to give it a shot.

Lake wind advisory today unfortunately

haha yeah wait for a calmer day. Hang with it - it will be frustrating at first. Start with nice short casts. There is no need to go out and pretend like you're starring in A River Runs Through It with outrageous casts.

For fly line to leader use an Albright knot. I actually use a line call amnesia (it's red) with a perfection loop on the end. Use perfection loop to perfection loop.

I only use flouro for tippet with trout and use the same perfection loop to perfection loop.

If I'm using mono for bream or bass I either use a blood knot or uni to uni. Depends on the size of line.

As to flies for bass bream. For top water The color depends on the sun. Early in the morning/late in the afternoon I use darker colors. Lighter as the sun comes up.

For trout you just have to try and match the hatch. Try to find what their hitting. Or just go to an attractor pattern.

When fishing, remember mend you line. If you get drag in your line you won't get bites.

Sure thing, after you make a cast across stream (upstream or downstream don't matter) you will likely get a slack or bow in the belly of your fly line. All you do is flip that belly upstream.

Nice! I've got a 350 dollar Orvis outfit and find myself using my 50 dollar Cabela's outfit more often than not.

Have been doing much more technical fishing in pocket water with tons of brush, and the shorter Cabela's rod and lighter weight (my Cabela's is a seven and a half foot, three weight and Orvis is a nine foot, five weight) is the better bet. Plus it's so much fun to hook a rainbow or bass or bluegill on a lighter-weight rod. I caught a smallmouth bass yesterday on it and thought I'd snagged a rock at first - you feel the fight with those lighter weights!

I save the nine-foot rod more wide open water and lakes with lots of room to backcast.

Apart from that, lots of good videos online to watch and learn how to cast and fly fish. One of my favorite, short, and accessible books is Curtis Creek Manifesto. It's sort of an irreverent graphic novel/fly fishing manual with lots of good tips.

I have a 2 wt that I play with sometimes. A few years ago I hook a bass on it that was maybe 1.5lbs. Felt like a monster. It was so much fun.

Need to get it out again before too long.

Mending is tricky and just takes practice. When you are fishing across a river that has currents moving at two different speeds, the line will get a sag in it from the portion flowing faster. You flip that line upstream so that your line is all drifting at the same pace down river.

Anyone ever fly fished in key west? Going down in June and will definitely take the Stella but really would like to get on a permit with fly tackle.

Not a "fishing" vacation but I plan to fish everyday. 2 or 3 days will be offshore and I'll be on my own the rest of the time. Permit or bonefish would be excellent...not sure my gear can handle a big tarpon. My biggest rod is a 9wt meridian
