re: The Fly Fishing Thread: Questions, pics, discussion all here

Cabela's has some sweet gear too though. I tend to lean toward companies that specifically deal in fly fishing gear, but that is not to say that those are always better. Lots of good fly fishermen I know use Cabela's gear with tons of success (including my grandfather, who I would consider the best technical fly fisherman I know). I am by no means an expert fly fisherman and I am honestly kind of brand driven. Folks in here should be really helpful for when you pull the trigger.

New Kraken came in, just need to take it to get some backing put on it.

Who's getting out there this weekend boys???

Any seattle area fly fishers on here? Looking at an early september trip out that way with the wife and would like to get a guide for a day. So many options though I'm lost on where to start. Ideally I'd like to do a float/boat trip that she would enjoy while not fishing, but if that's too limiting I'm open to something else. We'll be north of seattle for the most part. Flexible on species.

I will bump it for you but I am afraid I don't have any info on that.

Yeah I figured it was a long shot but you never know on this board. Thanks for the bump.

That thing is beautiful.
I need to pull the trigger before they discontinue the color.

They bring it back about once a year I think but they are limited right now. They just shipped mine last Tuesday

I know I've said it before, but I'm impressed with the Omega every time I fish with it. They really do make a quality reel and it's held up really well to some pretty heavy abuse with hardly any maintenance.

My kraken is so light that it feels cheaply made I was expecting it to be heavier

I have a NVG and the Omega. Both are really sick reels. I have the Omega up lined and rewlly only throw it lately on pretty windy days, but I really think I prefer the Omega. It saved my arse a couple times when we were in Eleuthera. I think the Nautilus drag is a little better, but the Omega is an overall smoother feeling reel.

Yeah I had several frustrating trips a few weeks ago and haven't touched it since and now it's getting too hot for me to wanna be out there long. This fall I will give it another shot.

Meh - just go early or late! Either way you have to keep going or you'll never improve. Those of us who have success in fly fishing put a lot of work into it - for me its a big reason I'm so passionate about it. You don't want to have just spent all that money and stop after a few frustrating trips.
Been out of the country for a couple weeks and unfortunately missed the green drake hatch in the catskills Was really looking forward to that one.
I'll be back at it this weekend and will post up some pics. May just chase smallmouth since they're running well now.

Blue are you throwing an 8 down there? Im going to Turks again over new years and planning on doing another bone trip. Threw my 8 last year but its not as fast as id like it to be for that situation.

What kind of rod is your 8 wt?
Posted on 6/8/16 at 10:05 am to Saskwatch
Yep. I brought two 8's and a 10. Didn't take the 10 out of the case, but didn't really see or hunt for anything big enough to catch wit hit.
What do you mean not as fast? Like you want a larger arbor? There are a few reels that you can buy in 8wt with a larger than normal arbor if you wanna stick with 8. I have very limited experience fishing for bonefish, but I'd be skeptical going any larger than that. Like I said above, I kept one of my reels spooled with 9wt just for super windy days. Those damn fish are so spooky that I wouldn't even think about throwing it on a calm day. I might actually respool that reel with 7wt for my next trip, and swap the line to 9 only if it's really windy.

TFO Mangrove. Its great for marsh, but I feel like it lacks some punch with the wind.
Posted on 6/8/16 at 10:07 am to Saskwatch
My friend has one and I agree. Kinda crappy in the wind but a really solid rod nonetheless. I wasn't sure if you were referring to the rod not being fast or the reel. If you want a faster rod, just stay with 8 and throw a few until you find one you like.
