Terrifying day of fishing

Woke at 5:30 to cool, clear skies over Hackberry. Drank some coffee, went inside to get ready for a boat ride and walked back out to the thickest fog i've ever seen.
Our plan was to run north Big lake since the previous days catch was less than spectacular fishing south.
We have GPS on the boat and had confidence in our navigation. We idled out into the ship channel and found the eastern shoreline then idled north. 7mph.
Had bow and stern lights on and also had a very bright handheld Cree light just in case we heard a boat coming.
Heard an outboard coming behind us close to the cut and it was a damn grey and black 25' Haynie overtook us going at least 40. That scared the shite out of us. Guess it scared him as well because he came off plane just in front of us. About 1 minute later he's almost rammed headon by a Ranger headed south running the eastern shoreline! Ranger swerves to miss him and is now headed directly for us. He sees us and turns his boat completely sideways to avoid us. We were pissed but to tell you the truth we all were at fault for being out there in those conditions.
Anyway, limped into Turners finally and idled out to the marsh Island. Could hear a few voices through the fog. It's 9:00 now and cannot see 50' in front of us in any direction. Anyway, finally see a boat on the same drift as us. We're pulling in a few trout when we head an outboard sound getting closer. Finally the boat comes out of the fog and almost smokes that other boat who's drift fishing. Guy screams very load "SLOW THE frick DOWN!!!""
Guy comes off plane,"ohh man, i'm sorry dude". Other guy with a quick "frick YOU!""
Haha, had us dying laughing. Anyway, fog lifted around 10. Head up north to the Prien lake area. Picked up a few flounder and reds. We caught 26 specs,4 reds,1 black drum, and one 13" Channel Mullet. Rest were wither huge fish that we threw back or White trout. If i never see another White trout the rest of my life it will be too soon. Them bastards were thick from the Cameron jetties to the casinos.

I hate being out in the fog, because there is always that a-hole who flies through it. Glad you are ok

White trout
We tore them up on moss lake all weekend right off the wharf on artificial. 10-11". I call em trout nuggets. Of course I would prefer some big trout but fish is fish. We fried them up with about 2doz crabs boiled from the traps.

Some people seem to think a GPS shows other boats somehow.

So you throw white trout back?

Should be mandatory reading for everyone who owns or operates a boat.

Following a GPS in the fog or dark is eventual suicide. Have a radar on your boat or stay at the camp until the fog burns off.

What's wrong with white trout? We were catching them in the 12-14" range mixed in with specs this weekend in dularge and them suckers taste just fine.

quote:i agree if you're running but we were doing the right think by idling and were almost victims. Did feel a bit of responsibility since it was our decision to go out in that but had it not been for the other boats running then there would have been no real threat.

If you ice them down well as their caught and then glaze the fillets they will keep just fine. It's a little bit more work and planning but they're worth it imo.

And with a radar you could have seen them coming and avoided them.

We also fished south on Saturday when we should've started north from the get go. That fog was thick Sunday morning but we didn't go out in it.

What does glaze the fillets mean?

Freezing the fillets on a baking sheet, and then dipping them in ice water before re-freezing.
Makes a thin layer of ice on each one and keeps it from freezer burning. Also allows you to take a few out of the bag at a time since it's not one solid block of ice.
It's how commercial fish houses do bags. Trout are very delicate, giving them a glaze will make them taste fresh for a lot longer. This is the only way to successfully freeze white trout that I've found, but it makes them taste great.

We went out like that one time, got to the fishing area and fished for a couple hours in shut in fog, could barely see corks after we casted. Eventually, the fog lifted, and we were surprised to see about 10 boats in the immediate vicinity. We heard voices and a motor now and then, but had no clue there were so many boats out.

Was just reading that. They are very lucky the way that boat rode up instead of stopping.
We helped two guys off a sand reef that hit it going at least 25, they flew all over that boat.
