Got selected for a gun hunt in Tensas NFR this December but have never hunted the area. Trying to get some intel before I start getting boots on the ground. Only thing I know is palmettos and bears! haha
Any insight or info anyone willing to give?

The name of the game is to try to get away from all the other hunters ( not easy ) It can get very sloppy or very dusty. If you don’t live close try to get a cabin at the camp ground. I have seen some very nice deer come out of there in the last 2 years. Study the map. Good luck.

Step 1: Learn the correct name of the place, Tensas National Wildlife Refuge

The refuge is huge. There will be lots of hunters. Go in early, get deep and plan to sit all day. If you get up and walk around, you will undoubtedly run across other hunters.
There are times at first light where I looked around where my climber was and saw three or four other orange vests.
There are big deer out there, but they are smart and will likely bed down on you all day.
I'd haul in a deer cart in case you need to haul one out.
Finally, tons of hunters from the bayou that have no idea how to act at campgrounds and in the woods.

Didn't know they moved the National finals rodeo to Tensas. Those cowboys better wear plenty of orange and look for 4' tall coonasses in 3' tall ladder stands drawing down on them with grandpere's old iron site 30-30.

I walked across a few old fat dudes sitting 3-4 feet off the ground. I'm looking them in the eye as I'm walking by and whispering "Sorry!"

Before you teach someone the name of the refuge, maybe you should learn the name as well. It is Tensas RIVER National Wildlife Refuge.

One is an error of omission, the other is completely something else.

Loaded with pigs
Make sure the pig you are shooting at isn’t a bear

I know those federal wardens love to pose as hunters in the field. Better have all your licenses, permits, hunter orange, etc. Hunt legally or you'll be seeing a federal judge in Monroe.

Best place to hunt is right by the game warden station.
