Tell me about the Shield Apex Trigger

So I took the bait and picked up a Shield 9mm without safety at GunBuyer for $319, free shipping, plus $75 rebate.
Lots of folks rave about the Apex Tactical trigger kit. Is the stock trigger on the Shield bad? Is it a must have upgrade?
For those of you who have one, did you do the install yourself or have a gunsmith do it?
What are your thoughts?

Apex makes fantastic triggers. They are a huge upgrade over the stock trigger. I have never tried them on a shield but I have on 3 different full size M&Ps. If I were to buy a S&W today, I would order the Apex at the same time and never look back.

Ok. Which kit? Buy directly from Apex or do you have a retailer of choice?
If I'm handy enough to build an AR should I be able to install myself or leave it to a smith?
ETA: Thanks Chat!

if the shield is just like my m&p 9mm and it should be, then it has a 2 piece hinged trigger function that acts sort of like a safety but it means you have a longer stroke to pull the trigger.
I did the aluminum apex trigger on mine and it felt more under control and didn't have that feeling of "damn I gotta pull a little more" waiting for the trigger to release. what I didn't like was the flat face and squared off edges of the aluminum trigger.
I later bought the polymer set seer kit and that was the ticket. it felt great and looked and felt like that's how the gun should have been made straight from the factory.
the instructions are very simple and I did the mod myself just watching the videos they made showing it. and I am no gun hand by far, more like a gun novice when it comes to working on them.
my gun feels and functions 1000% better then as purchased now

I have it and installed it myself. I've built several ARs and consider myself pretty handy. The biggest issue you will likely have is removing the rear sight. It's a bitch to say the least. Takes way more force than I was expecting. You have to beat the hell out of it.
That being said it's a tremendous upgrade. Much smoother take up and solid wall with a good break.

Did y'all buy the entire kit (springs, sear, striker block, etc) or just the trigger assembly.
Kit $159.95
Trigger: $79.95

I purchased the whole kit. Very easy to install. Installed it on my Shield and Full size M&P9.

Anyone install one on a XDS?
Are there any other mods I would have to do being there's a grip safety?

Apex makes awesome trigger kits, but take Coach O's words instead of mine...
I own two M&Ps (5" core and a compact) with the forward set sear trigger kit. The trigger makes them infinitely easier to shoot without feeling like a 3-stage trigger as the original does. I would think the installation is similar but here's my install video for the full sized and compact guns. If you don't have a rear sight drift tool you may create some new cuss words when working on your gun:
