Get a crack barrel.35 whelen or 350 legend. Nobody uses muzzleloaders during primitive hunting season anymore.

I use a Muzzleloader for primitive. I usually end up letting everything go, but i still use my Encore, because it is very accurate. Every season, gotta take the turkey barrel off and put the Mzl barrel on.

I shoot handgun bullets in a sabot.
50/45 over 110 grains of triple 7. You really only need 70 to 90 grains
( 45/70). Thats the original 45/70.

I don’t knock the cartridge rifles, but it is a primitive season, and i like the extra work of muzzleloading. Gives you a sense of how hard it was way back. Knowing i’m gonna let most everything walk anyway, i myself see no need to buy yet another modern rifle.

I've killed way more deer with a muzzleloader than my rifle because that's when they rut here and where I've hunted in bama you are limited to primitive. I have a Traditions pursuit G4 ultra lite, I love it. I have also shot Knight disc elite. Climbing trees and hunting woods, anything I see is in range. .50 cal barrel, and I've used. 45 cal bullets with the plastic sabots, it's easy. I do powder but I hunt with guys who do pellets. 209 primers, mine is a crack barrel but the Knight was a bolt style. They are really easy, I think they're fun, and hitting a deer 50 yards away with a 250 to 300 grain bullet is pretty damn effective.

If you hunt in Mississippi or Louisiana, go with a single shot rifle.

I have a 50 caliber Thompson Center Hawkens I bought in kit form. Cheap & easy to asemble. I polished all the brass on it. Beautiful gun and is super accurate. Iron sights. I use real black powder. Tuns of smoke but it’s hard to find now. I have killed 3 deer. Have never missed a deer with it.

That encore with shotgun primers is a far cry from “the way it was back when”.

Get a flintlock if that’s what you want.

Naw, it’s primitive enough. I think the inaccuracy of those old guns lead to wounding and loss / waste.

I have a Thompson Omega 50cal. 3 50gr pellets and a 250gr shock wave bullet will wreck a deer. It kicks like a mule but whatever it hits isn't going anywhere.

Very accurate.

If you’re hunting in Mississippi, you need to buy the primitive license and you can use your regular rifle.

+1 for Hawkins style.
Real black powder.
I Teflon tape my nipple threads, melt wax around the percussion cap,and a small nickel shaped piece of electrical tape on the end of the barrel. It will go off after a long hunt in the rain.

Private land only.
If you’re trying to use it for multiple states you really have to pay attention to the regulations. For instance people just say 35whelen or 350 legend. But in louisiana it has to be single shot exposed hammer 35cal or larger.
Some states don’t allow scopes some states require non metallic cartridges. Just an FYI

Copied from mdwf website below
During any open season on deer with primitive weapons after November 30, a person may use any legal weapon of choice on private lands only, if the person is the title owner of the land, the lessee of the hunting rights on the land, a member of a hunting club leasing the hunting rights on the land, or a guest of a person specified above. If the person is required to have a hunting license, the person must have a primitive weapon license, Sportsman's License, or a Lifetime Sportsman's License.
