I don't remember the year, but somewhere around that time the brackish marsh in cameron parish froze solid enough to walk on...

fricking crazy to see ducks bounce after you shot them...

Told this tale many a time here.....was so cold, that the one of the only "unfrozen" waters around the river parishes was the hot water canal that ran from the sugar mill to the swamp behind east St. John. My best friends little brothers came back from robin hunting (w/pellet guns) w/several mallards. He told us the canal was full of them. He wasn't lying, and at age 17, I wasn't worried about game laws too
much. It's without a doubt the easiest ducks I've ever killed, and also the most demonstrative event evidencing my lack of concern about game laws at 17.

I remember it. We were at MawMaw's house in Cottonport. Bayou was frozen. I guess the waterlines froze. We had to bust ice on the bayou to get water and pour it in the toilet to flush.

It was 83, and it didn't get above 25 up here for like 10 days. The plumbers made bank. Our lake finally froze over after about a week. If you could stand it, and I'm talking about low teens with 10-15 mph winds, the ducks were here for the taking, until the lake froze. Was driving to B.R. for Christmas on hwy. 28 and while crossing the Calcasiue(sp), a flight of greys hit right by the bridge. Only open water.

83 was much deadlier because
1 cold front came faster than expected
2 north wind came about 10-15 knots harder than anticipated

Nearly everyone that died that day died because they got stuck where they were.

Also th lessons of 83 where still fresh in the outdoor media reports.

That day in 83 was one of the most bizarre days I have had....

89 was colder and colder longer.

Never forget seeing temperature drop 9 degrees on a bank sign in algiers while we were getting donuts..

Lessons learned at others expense saved my life a week later - along w USCG....

I remember that well. My dad had yet to reform to game laws and we killed ducks that would make most on here stomach turn. That was the stretch that convinced me we were doing wrong even though he was my dad. I haven't broken a game law on purpose since then. I am damn glad I figured out what we did was wrong and even prouder I was able to convince my dad of it.

Didn't they lift limits on specs and reds since they were all dying from the freeze that year?

Filled two pirogues and a skiff full of ducks. Only reason we quit was because we ran out of shells. All of this was in a cut on the NW end of Flat Lake.

Don't remember which one it was but it was crew change for me in Hopedale & the snow started falling when we made it to New Orleans. Big wreck on hwy 61 delayed us 4 hours. People in the ditches everywhere. About an hour from my house on a very remote backroad was a guy standing in the middle of the road waving us down. This guy had New York plates & had snow skies on top of his car which was in the ditch He said he's seen a lot of ice but nothing compared to that shite. Pulled him out & helped him get to a hotel. A couple days after the river (Boeuf) was frozen over All you had to find was a puddle that wasn't frozen to kill a limit quickly
